Hi Heads. My uncle John Pat (yup that's his real name) has a Bluegrass festival twice a year at his camp. It's in Northern PA just off of I-80. I have been toying with the idea of having a meet there for some time. (not during the Bluegrass festival because they do not drink at those) There is a bunkhouse for 12, showers, flush toilets, etc. There are kitchen facilities, a huge pavillion, tables, chairs, and even a gazebo. There is a motel 9 miles away too. And he has tons of room & hookups for RVs. It's along the Allegheny River and he usually has hayrides too. What I'm wondering is #1-is there any interest? It would be mainly a panel jam, and #2-when? It could be in either August or September of 2005, and I don't want to conflict with any other meets. Attendees would get fed 3 meals a day & of course there would be paint & panels, etc. Would anybody want to do this? Please let me know as I need to start planning! Love...Jill

So is September a better time? I was thinking the middle of August since the International is @ Mazeppa in July. Yup, it sure is pretty there Broooce. If in September, I was thinking about two weekends after Labor Day. The foliage ought to be just starting to turn. There is also a lot of room for tenters. My family reunion is there each Labor Day weekend, and there are about 250 folks. We all fit in just fine, with no fistfights and a lot of Good Eats. We have a nice bonfire going and it is really a fun atmosphere. There is a big stage and we could have a Letterhead Jug Band Jam. The back of the pavillion is just begging for a dry-brush old style sign (it's T-111). My uncle is delighted with the idea of a gang of Krazy sign painters coming to hang out at his camp. Any input will be appreciated. Or just tell me to shut up! Love...Jill

Billy, The river is shallow but rocky-bottomed with a swift current. There are lots of canoers in summer. And fishermen! The road to the river is a trip in itself...it's a mile downhill, and rocky as hell. It's a great calf exercise on the way back up! There is a spring running out of the hillside halfway up/down, depending on which way you're headed. There is even a tiny picturesque cemetery down by the river, with graves 100 years old or more. I wonder how they got the wagons down there back in the day. The camp is about a half-mile in off the main road, on a straight dirt track. I am sure that you could mountain-bike just about anywhere up there. I was thinking that the gazebo would be a great carving pavillion for Joe Chips. Maybe I can drum up a bluegrass band to play one night too. Ideas keep running thru my head, I dunno why this has never ocurred to me before last summer. My uncle wants to do it this year, but there simply is not enuff time to plan. August or September? Love...Jill

Hey Jill Count me in for sure. About time you had another biggie. Second chance for everyone that missed out on mars to see how good a meet someone with purple hair can put on. If it's half as good as the mars meet it will be great can't wait. love catherine

I could plan for one that far out. I would prefer it in Sept. The farther away from Mazeppa the better. That will give me some more time to save up. I will be in Mazeppa and would love to come to Penn. also.

You can pack whatever you want, Big Guy, but be SURE to bring your guitar! Yes, we can wear PJs all day...it's CAMPING! I wanna try to see if my cousin's band will play, cheap, but if he won't...too bad! Gotta keep those costs LOW. I could barely sleep last night, thinking, and this is still a whole year away! Love...Jill and Mike....We'll call it the Kansas City Teat Trio! Ever hear that old song "The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane"?

Bill, maybe about 90 minutes? I know Clearfield is near State College, and that is how far it is. Love...Jill (weiner dogs welcome too!) edited to add this map: and to say MapQuest sez it's 121 miles from State College, or 2 hours 16 minutes.

It's way early to tell, but we may head that direction and make a vacation out of it. I owe my buds from college a visit. Haven't been to the hills and hollows of PA since '85. I'm sure the old stomping grounds have changed, but they've still got Genesee Cream Ale and Rolling Rock out there don't they? Except for that murderous stetch of 80 through the Chicagoland area, it's an enjoyable trip.
I took Jane out there when we were first dating -- have her tell you about our infamous camping trip!

I'll consider this one Jill if it's in August. It would be about a 5 hour drive for me and my better half. How's the tent camping? I need a good excuse to get more use out of my camping gear.

Bill, not only do I have Gennesee Cream Ale & Rolling Rock, I can get Iron City and Yuengling! (bad spelling on those) Maybe I finally will get to meet you & Jane! Checkers, the tenting is great up there, and I'm not a camper. If it would (god forbid) rain, my uncle would let us put our tents under the big pavillion (24'x48'?). He also has a huge canopy we could camp under. (maybe 18'x24') Harris, as far as I know, there are no nearby cow pastures. Here is my son's rendering of the banks of the Allegheny. Notice the steep road behind him! Perfect for Billy's mountain bike. Love...Jill

Did I hear shielding a tent from the rain?!? A lil rain'll keep your tent clean.
If supernewbies are invited i'll definately make the effort to come. Seems like only a five hour drive from Baltimore. Might be my first meet ever.

If little dogs and banjo's are acceptable, I'm in, even if it's in Aug.(my vote was for Sept.) I'd like to see more bluegrass myself, but I can scout that out for myself once there. When is your uncle's bluegrass festival? I'm hoping the week before or after your planned event. It's a ways away still,so, I'll await your answer, I'd really like to participate in the bluegrasss festival. But if possible, I'll make it, sounds like a great location for such a happening. We did a version of it once, back in the hills and took over a camping ground and painted everything in sight, much to the delight of the camp owners. They really loved the river rock message board....

John Pat's Shady Lane Bluegrass Festival is held every 3rd weekend in July & every 4th weekend in September. This is his 4th year doing them. For more info on attending, please email me and I will send you his phone #. My email addy is jill-the-ripper@lycos.com I wanted to have it close to the festival, but then I got to thinking it would be too much work too close together for him and his family (he is 77) They do all the cooking & arrangements. I am sure he could book us a band or two. They are real raw old-timey bluegrass folks. Most of the attendees are very old and come in RVs. I went last year with my niece Steph and we were the 2 youngest gals there! (I'm 41) Any way, it is a nice place, not too "wild" yet it has plenty of charm and natural beauty. When I go to my family reunion there over Labor day, I will take a lot of pix. It really is the perfect place for a meet. Love...Jill

OK, I think I got it figured out now. One in July, none in August, and one in Sept. Is that right? Your description threw me a curve and I found myself looking for all the third weekends in July, duh....ONE!
As far as naming your event, options are numerous, leading off of your name is one, the localle another, many different ones come to mind. Jilly's Hilly Billy Panel Jam; Come to the mountain paint fest; Paintn' amongest the Pines; Jill's Great American Paint Sling; Pitch n' Paint; Jill's Great American Paint Fest and Campout; Bedrolls n' Brushes; Camp Artistic; Camp Oneshottawanna; Brushes n' BBQ Art Fest; that's ten, enough for now.
Why at 41/42, you're a youngster, I'm not much older than you, but totally enjoy ol' time bluegrass. Hope this works out, I'm jonsing already...heh-heh I'll be e-mailing you soon for particulars, thank you Jilly.

Dunno if I wanna advertise my name, that might keep some folks from attending! My creative juices are running dry today. Thanks & Love...Jill (still open to suggestions tho)
