The "main sign guy" in our locale has run into some sort of trouble. The rumors make me think he's at least down-sizing or maybe going out of business. He's at least moved out of his shop. In any case I think it'd be a good time for me to raise awareness about my services. A lot of people don't even know I'm here yet!! Any suggestions?

. . . .When I first got started on my own I was really blessed with my former boss sending me some work, but even when I was busy, I would jot down business locations where their sign looked really faded or in need of up-dating.
Then when things were slow, 'specially in the winter months, I would get my list out and drop by to "chat" and mention their sign.
You'd be surprised how often they would say,"YEH! Who does that kind'a work??" and there I would be gettin' the job . . . and those kind of starts can create a lotta repeat work down the road.
Then when your established and really busy you see an old sign and think, "MAN! I hope they don't call me . . I'm TOO busy to fool with that rag . . ."

Sheila... you gotta write a book! I can't count the times I've laughed out loud at your humorous way of relating those all too familiar trivial details of this trade.

In all seriousness, steak down main street totally naked. You'll get arrested but you will make the local papers. The headlines will read, "local sign maker likes being naked"
You will have customers lined up at your door, I promise. Capitalize on your assets. Its just plain smart business sense. Think outside the buns.

I support everything Doug says about Sheila. I, too, get such a kick out of her ability to grasp the essentials.
To the subject: How well do you know the guy, Penny? Did you have a relationship? I think it may be time for getting from the horse's mouth what's going on. I'd call him and ask. (He may be building a new and bigger shop, too?!?)
Just a thought. A whole lot of good and interesting stuff can come from clear and direct communication.
There are a few in my own town I would not call ever, and many I would call immediately. It's just a thought, lots of good could come from it.
