Hi folks. It is my pleasure to bring to you another Panel Swap. As your current Swap Handler I have chosen to establish a theme. Your use of this theme is not mandatory; use it or not, it's up to you. Let your imagination loose. This is the 4th Letterville Swap, and as most Lettervillians are quite busy through the summer (as if they aren't busy the whole year through), it will last a bit longer, hopefully making it easier to participate. There will be no list of panel promisers and no production or technique restrictions.
As the last few swaps have come & gone, one idea for swap management has continued to come up. That is the concept of all participants, working on their own, using the same subject. This “one subject” method, would hopefully inspire an interesting variety of panels using diverse ideas to address the single subject. I like the idea, but want to use multiple subjects of study under one theme instead. The increase of subjects may leave room for freedom of choice and, hopefully, also yield many versions of each subject. Having more to choose from, pinstripers, carvers, hand letterers, the digital folks, airbrush artists, etc., etc. may all feel at home. All provided subjects will fall under a broader theme, thereby maintaining an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and creative expression. Having thought about this theme for a while now, my only fear is that there will be too much creative stimulus pulling the participants away from the provided subjects and off to do panels of their own choosing. If that happens, so be it, that will be great too. Perhaps the timetable will permit multiple entries allowing some to tackle both a given subject and something of their own choosing.
I hope to run this swap from the time of making this post until September 30th. As the time draws near the Sept. 30th date, I will post a few reminders and updates to help guide this swap to a close. If all is going well, there is plenty of participation, folks are having fun, perhaps we will extend the swap; let's wait and see. I've seen many folks post their intent to participate; that's great, the more interest, the better for all. I'm glad to see so much interest; however, as I mentioned earlier, there isn't a need to add your names to a list. When you have completed your panel, send a photo of the completed panel to the mailing address below or a digital photo of the completed panel to the provided email address. Please include your name and return address with the photo[s]. Using a first in, first out principal, I will pair the first two participants panels for swapping and provide the panel creators their respective swap information. I will then continue this pairing process until the conclusion of the swap. Once I receive confirmation that both in a pair of swapped panels have reached their destinations, I will post links to the respective photos, allowing all to see the photos of the swaps completed to date. Once the swap has concluded and the slide show is produced, I will delete these links. I will provide a design for the swap cover page & not take a panel in exchange. As overseas swaps occur, I will contact the participants with their shipping information, and assist with arrangements when necessary. I'm hoping this photo update process will build enthusiasm and interest in the swap, adding to its smoothness and overall fun.
RULES ADDENDUM: 6-13-04
Each Panel Swap 4 participant, applying the "Golden Rule," will pay the shipping charges of the panels they are sending out.
So, without further delay, ...I Introduce to you,
The setting is a circus, ...any circus, realistic or imaginary. The circus exists at any time you choose, an early Roman circus, a circus of today, or a circus far into the future. We're going anywhere in reality or your imagination, for the fun & entertainment ...of course! The graphic depiction will be produced in your choice of medium, however you choose to express it.
Considering the rich history the sign world has with the circus, and the diversity of subject matter, we need not be short of inspiration. For the signists interested in using one of the provided subjects, I hope to see logo-like graphic developments, such that might be used for the show cards, posters or bills that might have been, are, or will be displayed to advertise these events. These often include illustrations too, so let it loose. For the other media such as pinstriping and the many others, I hope to see folks let their imaginations loose with their style of graphic depictions for these subjects as well. Outside of the subjects provided, circus animals, circus people, or circus vendors will surely be interesting places for all to find good subject material and inspiration. Should anyone rather use something completely off topic, go right ahead. Why not? I'm sure there would be many reasons this might occur. Let's enjoy the making and exchanging.
Provided Subjects:
Fabulously Hilarious Cycling Clowns
Beautiful Big Cats
Dancing Elephants
Vibrant Zebras
Amazing Sword Swallowers
Stunning Fire Eaters
Daring High Wire Acts
Thrilling Trapeze Artists
Circus Wagon Racing
Hair Raising Chariot Racing

Good Luck Dave. Glad to see you step up to the plate. But, I'm not sure swap-handler is a good enough job title for ya.....
So, in my official capacity as the Queen of Panel Swap #3, I hereby officially bequeath onto Dave Parr the title of RingMaster of Panel Swap #4. May your tent stay erect, your bearded lady not mistake nair for beard shampoo, your 1/2 man-1/2 woman not go through an identity crisis and your elephants make sure you are in front of them, not behind them when they choose to sit.

Hey "Ringmaster" - The idea is great, as well as your No Commitment changes. Nobody gets left out and nobody has to live in shame for not completing a panel. The exchange is also totally random and early finishers are rewarded with an early panel. I like it.

Seeing all of these fine folks voicing interest in making a panel, I'm having great fun just imagining what each individual will come up with. I'm getting anxious wanting to see them all. I guess I could chill a bit. You Think?

I never participated in a panel swap - I'm not a painter either - is it something I should attempt or start somewhere else first??? Sounds like fun!

I'm not an old timer here in Letterville, but I will try to help if I can. I've had others email with similar questions regarding this swap stuff.
I've looked for a post, I believe by Bill Diaz, that explains panel exchanges very well, but have been unable to find it. Basically, folks began to trade panels at meets. A way to share what you and others have learned and have a passion to do. People make a variety of different types of panels.
Panels are simply small signs or graphic compositions; carvings or carved lettering are often incorporated. Many panels are very sweet pinstriped designs. The air brush is also a popular tool. Trick designs combined with uncommonly used techniques are often used as a way to have a little fun; a little something out of the ordinary for most folks. The methods that you use really aren't the important thing, it is the sharing. It is putting something of yourself into the work and trading for something another Letterhead created.
The swaps here in Letterville (the on-going, on-line Letterhead meet) began with an initiative by Terry Whynott in 2002. He organized the first swap of '02/'03, the results of which can be see on the Step By Step page. There have been two other swaps since. Both swaps 2 & 3 can also be viewed on the Step By Step page.
One need not be a painter to participate. The more participants the better. If it sounds like fun to you, it probably will be.

posted February 20, 2004 11:54 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We has panel swapped for years at live meets. Some times it really is more of a trade, I do one for you, you do one for me, but other times we have thrown our business card in a bucket and drawn out a name to do a panel for. We have had "sign gods" draw our name and we have had young kids draw our name. It's not what you GET! It's the spirit you get the panel under. That kid struggled and tried so hard. He put his everything into that panel. That panel means just as much to us because of the memory that went with it and the great kid that gave it to us. He's grown now and we still see him at meets and he is a wonderful person...maybe that is the difference with this type of panel swap. It is a lot more anonymous and you might not know the person as well. All the more reason to get to know them...and attend the next meet they are at. ...my 2 cents.

Yep, I think it is Jane. Thank you. I thought Bill pretty well expressed the giving from inside without placing importance on skill level. There have been other posts on the letterhead spirit that express the same concept. The giving, receiving, teaching & learning. That's it in a nut shell.

But Dave, JANE said it, not Bill....I know after a while us old married folks just sort a merge...hehehehe Can't wait to see these panels photos as they come in. I like that we don't have to wait till the end. Way to go organizing this and I love the theme! JANE

Absolutely, you are quite welcome to join in. As you no doubt saw earlier in the thread, there are folks from Australia that have voiced their interest in participating. There have been other overseas panel exchanges in prior panel swaps. I, for one, would like to see that continue.
I can't wait to see what everyone creates for this swap. Glad to have you aboard Robert.

Yeehaw Robbie. Glad you have caught the panel bug. I am busy trying to think up something fun to paint for this one. For the UK folk, you will be surprized to know that if you keep your panel about 12"x14" it can be airmailed quickly for a very reasonable rate. Otherwise it's 6 weeks by boat! Love...Jill
