I know this subject has been covered but I can't find anything in the search so, How do you remove Gold leaf from a fire truck done in 1986?? Preferably without harming the paint. Thanks

It is actually a Chevy Blazer the Chief used. I don't know who did it or if it is cleared yet. I thought all vehicle Gold Leaf jobs were cleared. (or should be) I can find out if it's cleared, finding out who did it may be a little tougher. Thanks for the quick replys.

finding out who did it might make it easier to find out what kind of clear was used on it. some of the regular gold leaf artists in the NJ area used urethanes even back that far as a clear coat. will be fun to remove if they did.

if you find out, let me know and I will see what I can find out for you. I know most of the Firetruck gold leaf artists that work in NJ.

Since it was done in 86, the clear used could be a urethane which can be a bear to get off. No matter what, when you do get it off, on a vehicle that old, it's really gonna show the discoloration and fading of the paint. The easiest way to get it off is to stick some duct tape over the lettering and yank. This will pull the gold itself up, along with the clear that was over the gold ( works pretty good most times) It will leave the size, but that's pretty easy to remove. There are three approaches to clearing gold leaf. Some guys clear after burnishing but before outlining. This will leave an area of clear on the truck paint around where the gold was. If it was cleared with an automotive urethane, this will be a bitch to get off. Some guys outline the gold and then clear , this leaves the clear on top of the One Shot, this is pretty easy to get off. Some clear over everything, this leaves that pesky clear on the truck paint again. Denatured alcohol and a LOT of rubbing will get the One Shot off, oven cleaner will work BUT more than likely will discolor the red so I wouldn't go there. If they used a varnish for a clear, the alcohol will get it, if they used a urethane...you're probably gonna have to sand and buff, sorry.

Ok? So how about removing poorly applied gold leaf or aluminum leaf.
I know this will shock all of you. But I really made a dog's breakfast of a piece. Which really surprised me as I have been guilding for such a long time (about 30...Days)
Anyhow what is the best way of removing it.. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using an acrylic painted HDU panel, with Lefranc size, and it is not cleared. Thanks, Dale

Emergency One and American Eagle both were using Imron clear in 1986, but if what you have is just a chiefs car, it probably didn't come from either of those manufacturers.Dab a little Easy Off on a letter and see what happens.

yeah but Jeff thier black outlines for the striping was really neat. Actually you were one of the names that came to mind in case it was one of them, biut back then I worked for the local e-one dealer and I know that back then Oceanville had E-one trucks, I believe they were Slime green too.
I know who did the newer trucks right down the road from them too, and I know I can find out about alot of the other trucks down there. My fear is that it was done by a guy that lived in Pomona, he died about 6 years ago. I dont think he used urethanes though.
Your best bet is to look at what George Perkins had to say, he is on the same wavelenght that im thinking of too in regards to what you can try to do.
