My sons friend asked me to put some trible graphics on his car.I don't have vectorized ones so I'm going to try something.I took a piece of vinyl and turned it upside down to tape it to the mat.I then drew the graphic design I wanted and cut it out with an exacto,removed the backing and suck it to the white paper.Tomorrow I will scan it and vectorize.Shouldn't be any cleaning up because it's vinyl and no dots.Do you think it will work??I will let you know the results.

Well, as soon as you scan it, BOOM! ya gots dots but at least it will be a pretty clean scan. If you're using software to autotrace the design there may not be any clean-up.
I do a lot of tribals and for the most part they're pretty simple to vectorize once you have an idea of what you want the design to look like.

Randy..What I'd like to know is...What are "tribal" graphics???
I have had requests too, and it seems every customer's idea of "tribal graphics" is different.
Anyone know a definitive description of "tribal graphics"????

Randy, That is the prefered way around here that way you can give the customer that custom look and they are not going to see it on anything else, and when people ask you can bet no one else is goint to have that one to punch out or undercut you, and there is an endless supply of these litte go fast cars and they all want something different and cooler than the last guy and they are willing to pay. just remember some of these guys/girls spend upwards of 5k on engines so cool looks have but one limitation. Quality is never cheap! beside it keeps the creative juices flowing just don't let them drip on the floor, the stains are not removable.

Believe it or not, I do alot of tribal design work more so for older people then the young'uns. Whether its hood and trunk or down the sides. I work 1/2 the design out for each vehicle with a thin sharpie pen on paper then give it to my friend Jon who scans it in the computer and adds the other 1/2 in Corel. It is then stretched and munipulated to fit exactly what I want as I visualize the vehicle with my brain. Tribal is pretty simple but the widths are most important for the look as it can't be too skinny or too fat, it must be eye pleasing. Most all of my designs are in greys or blacks and all in paint. I separate the center pieces and outline the main copy then add more striping in the center. They lay out simple, but very effective for getting higher prices.

Dave, it started off with tribal (indian, celtic, etc. etc) tattoos - each tribe has its own markings like a branding iron, basically, each with a different meaning.
Now, "tribal" doesn't have any real meaning, at least not in the pop culture world, it's just a term used to describe graphics, mostly stripe-like designs, that have an edgy (edgey?) aggressive look to them - usually lots of sharp barbs and sections that intertwine - can be utilized/combined with flames.
Here's a couple examples, things that I have done:
A biz card design utilizing the "S" logo and tribal stripes/flames also used on my website:
A "tribal flame" graphic for a moto fender:

Flames.. tribals.. or.. whatever you wanna call it:
A license plate, these are flames with a tribal flair:
There's a pretty broad description of what "tribal" is.

Thanks for your comments heads.I scand the graphics in and vectored them.It took 5 seconds and there they were-beautifull-worked great. no mess just great graphics.

Randy, Thou must consult the Trible Bible. Check out these flames Ed "CJ" Williams just did. They are all hand-cut & airbrushed, then hand-outlined, on vynull. The client had the magnetic kind for his PT Cruiser but had problems with them. I think he done good. Love...Jill

Randy, I found that you find your best design ideas and resource is your local tattoo shop. I feel that is where it all started yrs. ago. I still start out the old way, very fast and lose with paper & charcoal to keep lose & flowing and same for flames.

Mike O' Neill finally said it. I was thinking the same thing days ago, but it's such a cool and serious post that I didn't have the nerve.
If I recall, the tribles were getting into the grain storage, which I believe was a modernistic hybrid called Triticale. The trible is imaginary, but the grain is real.

I like your first idea of doing it youself if you have an idea ... I don't understand the flipping and mats stuff. Just cut it out of the vinyl (cheap black) and scan the weeded vinyl ... want to draw on it just mask it first.

I always thought a 'trible' was a sort of legless hamster, feaured in the old star trek series.
