I give - I can't find locally the type of hole digger that has the hinged blade; you get to the bottom of your hole, pull a handle, and the blade swings 90 degrees to scoop out the leftovers. All my hardware stores/landscaping/farm stores only carry the clamshell type - which is useless in a hole deeper than 40". I have to go 60" for a job very soon - I've got an auger, but it's heck on the back pulling the blade up that far. Anyone seen one; know where to get one?? Thanks!!

just last saturday on you ask on this old house the landscaping person that answers peoples questions had exactly what you are talking about. the post hole digger i believed he call it was from, boston post hole digger.look up there site on this old house, i hope this helps.

That's the one - and I found only two companies that carry it, and they are both out of stock. Pricey things, too....one company has it at $95; the other at $135.00... (Joe's link)! I may have to reconsider how I'm going to dig these holes. I may have to "modify" one of my old clamshell styles!

Rick..I don't dig holes or do installs any more, but when I DID have to dig holes I found that renting a power auger from the local rental shop was WAY easier than doing it manually!!!!!!! I just added the rental cost into the overall cost of the job.
If the customer didn't like that...they could dig the damn holes themselves!!

Picked-up a gas powered auger at Lowes for $219, and it is one of the best investments I ever made. Got the 8" auger for the 6x6 posts. Good luck. Bob

Well, I've got an Eager Beaver gas auger with half a dozen bits of various sizes. The problem comes into A) the weight of the unit pulling it up out of the ground when I'm working by myself and B) clearing the remaining dregs that are invariably still at the bottom. I was hoping to get one of these diggers to help clear the dregs out, but it may not be worth the $135 cost; especially when I've got over $2K wrapped up in the big auger.
