I will be gold leafing some dimensional letters that I cut on our 408 for a sign that will be attached to a building, approximately 5 feet from the ground. Usually our leafed signs are hung out of reach so using a clear coat on the gold is not needed.

You know that there will be plenty of people that will have a need to touch the letters so my question is this. Has anyone used Frog Juice as a clear?

Thanks
Bj

Hi Barry, I do not clear over Gold Leaf unless it is on a vehicle. If you think people will be touching these letters, I would use an Automotive two part Clear on them. Spray the entire letter, that means the back side also.
Frog Juice?.................NO!

I'm in the same situation right now as well.

Just today I went ahead and Frog Juiced (3 light-medium coats) the gold on some 1" HDU letters; the returns are painted black. I debated over not clearing them, but, I still have to come back in and touch up the black paint on the returns and I know that there will be a lot of handling involved. I don't want to get fingerprints on the gold.

Another consideration is the placement of the sign. It's high enough up to keep hands off, but it is also in a very high traffic area and the sign will need to be cleaned time and time again. I figure that the FJ will help to protect the gold for the first 4-5 cleanings.

The FJ seemed to take away a slight bit of the luster, but the overall impact of the lettering should still be outstanding. I will post some pics when it's done.

Good Luck...
