I have a customer that wants me to paint an illuminated awning...
The awning is about 10 years old but the vinyl on it is fairly good...
I need to paint it entirely green with the lettering remaining white (the actual color). I'll put a mask for the letter and plan to spray it medium green.
what would you think about using 1shot???
Thanks for the replies....
Marc
by the way...the awning is a bell shaped one 6'wide, 4'high with a 3'projection.....

Can you find out the material? It apparently is not an awning fabric but a vinyl. Many can be painted with proper prep, however life expectancy of awnings is not that great - especially if it's been up 10 yrs already. Look for a label, or try a hidden spot to sample. Hate to give any real advice without material

yopu might also want to consider clean/prep time versus new materials. I recently re-lettered a 18' awning for a local awning company, the bill was high and they complained! I reminded them that they took hte awning off the building, again up for many years, and dropped it on my table! all I did was clean off old letters, hand scrap, and clean and prepare the 9" I needed to work with and the bill topped $150! Then I lettered! They were happy with the work but hten had to clean the rest of the awning!!

As I see...you're asking the same questions...and got the same answers as me!!!
I can't Identify for sure the material but seems to be signplus banner... 1shot seems to dry OK and the ty-cote holds well...so i'm quite ready to risk myself.
I'did letter a few hundreds of awnings for the same company over the years...but it's the first time ( i hope the last ) i've been asking to perform that kind a smut!!!!
Anyway, I gave my advice the the awning co. : NO PROMISES - NO WARRANTY
Will it be illuminated again? If not, I used a high quality Exterior Latex on a Green awning, the customer wanted it Dark Blue. The Blue took 2 coats. Then the lettering was White with a black outline.
The White took three coats. It went on fine.

If your customer wants the whole awning to be illuminated then you need a translucent paint. Like GripFlex then clear coat. 1shot is opaque and will block the light. Not all lettering enamel (1shot or chromatic) is compatible with vinyl awning materials. We have had personal experience with that one. Even though we were told it was compatible.
Use latex like myers said if it does not have to be illuminated.
I would not guarantee paint compatiblity regardless of what manufactures say!

Well, if it is an illuminated awning you have to get the old stuff off first. If it doesn't have to be illuminated but the lights are still behind it it needs to be blocked out on the inside so the old stuff doesn't show through anyway at night. There are so many awning materials anymore that your guess is as good as mine. I have had good luck with nazdar inks on vinyl awnings. Bill

It appears that the common sense gained my customer!!!
After three days and a zillion phone calls, I convinced him to have a new Cooley on the structure, so I will be able to eradicate it and gave him a MUCH BETTER result...and also much rewarding ($$$) for me!
