I did a custom pin years ago for use on special occasions....

vinyl/Gerber EDGE print of a wicked looking clown breathing fire...this decal was applied to a finished pin, but the trick was in the 14 coats or so of clear lacquer with lots of flex additive coating overtop to protect it...

How many times at the lanes I've made such a near miss I've wished the pins had had another coat of paint on them, I'd have knocked them down.

i paint a few pins here and there, i buy new pins by the case, so there is not too much prep work involved, basically take the high spots out with a d.a. sander, fill seams with plastic body filler, sand the filler smooth, prime, guide coat, sand again, and when satisfied begin paint, i usually use HOK automotive paint, basically its refinished like a car!!

I never painted a bowling pin,
but I have done a Croquet set.
A special one for a Dow Retiree
made of some type of acrilic they manufactured.
It was a booger to do, had to use Airplane paint at that time.
Sherwin Williams has a new water based acrylic clear coat now, I got a free sample gallon of it today,
wonder if that would work on a bowling pin?
Ask Sherwin Williams, maybe they will give you a sample.

Hey Dana, I have gotten some pins off of ebay, and most recently from a friend of mine that owns a bowling pro shop. Being used, the ones I've gotten require extensive work. If you can find new ones, use them! I use the same methods that Brian listed earlier. I sand with 320, apply automotive filler (bondo), sand, putty, sand, prime, sand, paint, sand, do artwork, clear. I use 1 Shot for my striping, etc.and all automotive finishes for the rest, including clear. It's a lot of work, but the results are fantastic! Don't expect to break even, nevermind get rich doing these. It's strictly a fun thing for me.
