I recently enquired about the Spandex 'Slatz' changeable sign systems for a job I'm doing and when I got their quote (Clark Sign Systems) I thought it was a little steep for a total of 12- 22" long Middle Slatz (2-1/4" high) and two strips of clips, each approximately 14-1/4" long. The quoted price was about $350.00 which comes to about $25 per component... No frame, no build by the vendor. I haven't used this type of sign system in years, so I thought perhaps someone could shed some light in this area regarding alternatives and pricing. Thanks.
Also, I've been so busy lately that I haven't checked into the board. How's Steve Shortreed doing these days? Maybe I'll do a subject search on that one.
Thanks.

We've done lots of them and I like them and the customers who have them like them. There really isn't much labor involved after you get it ... splat some names on the slatz, screw strips to wall, clip ... done. I've personally never priced one (that's the bosses job) but my guess on "alternative" pricing would be for you to double it, add the minimal labor to finish it and get paid. IMO its a classier, turnkey, alternative to a flat panel directory. (that you would put more labor into)

I've sold hundreds of them. Mostly as door signs with endcaps, but I also maintain 2 directories with them. With an automotive enamel custom background finish, & screenprinted copy they become a very high priced, but high-tech looking plaque & the custom treatment makes it more difficult for the client to get another vendor to take over.
The slatz directory shown HERE was set in a frame of polished avonite.

I know that Dad and Lat use them every time they work on an office building. Hi guys! I've been out of the clinic for 4 days now. Today is the first time I've really been up and around so I wanted to look in here. Lat told me about the Pelucid post and Dad. Oof! He's having a very hard time right now with me and now with Mom's heart problems. I don't know how he stands it all, so please don't think unkindly about him when he posts, no? He a little short tempered from worry and too much work. If you only knew him you'd understand what a kind heart he has. Its just that its almost as much as a human being can stand. Anyway, be nice to each other, no? Bye!

I use Slatz separately and built into other Spandex systems like Sculptura, and Signpole 80, there are other systems on the market, this one is cheaper and from Belgium, we bought the "slatz" system from them CoSign, and built a steel frame and then clad it with aluminium

Thanks for the replies! I'm East Coast US. Anyone know of any other Slatz suppliers other than Clark Sign Sytems. I think if I just order the Slatz lengths and clips, cut them here and vinyl clad them, they'll cost less than Clark wants to sell them for. It's hard to charge a customer $50 (double $25)for a single 2-1/4" x 20-1/2" Slatz tag before copy is added to it. I'll let you know how things "pan" out. Also, nice work from tose who offered pictures.
Thanks again.

Hiya Fran, It's been a while(years) since I've used them however, they are a great system. To be honest, I think you may be pricing these types of items a little low. We've been tripling our costs, and no one's complaining. By time you consult with the client to find what they want and need, place an order with the manufacturer, recieve the order, design, assemble, letter and invoice the client, you may just break even. Obviously, if it's a large order and you're fabricating a quantity of them, pricing may be a different story. Another system that I've come to like is Vista Sign. You can buy direct from the manufacturer or a master distributor. And they'll only sell to sign shops. I find the system reasonably priced and very customizable. Their support is great and they offer reasonably priced samples.
Havin' fun,
Checkers
