(said in my best Fly voice) Ok Heads here's the deal. FINALLY some work has come in. Yeehah! BUT when I go to use my printer....nuthin'. It is a 1998 HPDeskJet 692C. A real dinosaur. But I can't afford a new one right now, and I can see what the problem is. The little thin clear plastic strip that runs behind the printer carriage has come undone and I need to reattach it. But I am not sure what it needs to be in contact with behind the carriage. I called HP, it is outta warranty & the support starts @ $30. I emailed their tech site with the problem, but it takes a day to get a response. Can anyone tell me what to do? I gotta sell 2 logos by tomorrow, and that includes nice print-outs. If all else fails, I can charge a new printer @ Staples....but I just bought a new damn $30 print cartrige for this sucka yesterday. Please help? Thanks. Love...JILL

Do you know anybody local that has a decent printer? You could put the image on disc and ask then to print it for you. The print shop? or public library? your high school? Your talking just printing out a paper copy to show the client or camera ready prints, right? That could get you by till you had more time to get to the bottom of the problem. Wish I was more of a "techie" and could help you.

jill.....that is a an old printer i still have HP-550, the 1st one with 2 cartridges. works good yet. the 6 series HP's were cheap to begin with, most are plauged with problems. the price of printers nowaday are so cheap, you can buy a new printer for what you pay for new ink cartridges for the old ones. print quality has come a long way also. we bought a EPSON C 82 and this thing is amazing. has 4 seperate ink cartridges. these run $11 each for color, and the black is larger and is $25-26. now i think they are below $100 we paid $129.00 this thing prints photos....AND THE INK IS WATERPROOF!!! that old 6 HP has a print quality of a dot matrix..compared to the new ones that are 1200-2400 DPI. like you said in an differnt post...raise your prices....you got to have this equipment...let the customer pay!!!

Must be something in the air Jill...my hp 845c is acting up right now also. It will only print the top 1.5" of something then spits out the paper...seems to print fine with other programs...does this when printing out of signlab 5.0. Print fine yesterday.
Sorry I can't help you other than ditto to Jane said.
Just thought I let ya know you weren't alone with printer problems.
Hope ya get it worked out.

ok Jill I'll try to explain this in typed words.
Look on the back of the printer cartridge holder thing that slides on the silver rod, there should be a slot that the plastic strip will slide through.
The black printed side should face the front of the printer. Once you connect the strip to the other side your all set.
You should be lucky the strip didnt break.
Good luck

Just boring old me again with my boring old problem. HP emailed me "Since your printer is out of warranty and your strip has detached, we suggest a service call is in order bla bla bla" and STILL NO PHONE. I think this must be a sign from God to close up shop and join a nunnery. Or become a Wal-Mart greeter. I could never be a nun. If I could SEE where the damn strip goes, I could fix it. If my kid did not take my truck to work today, I could go to Staples and charge a new one. What the heck? I just charged $300 worth of material today right? I am SICK of sounding like a victim! But I feel like one! GRRRRR I am gonna learn Kelly's mantra: MY NAME IS DAN. Thanks for listening & helping too. Love...JILL

would know if this idea is dumb, if I saw the logos... but I had to get around a failed printer once (once HA!) & I put a pen in my plotter & plotted outlines on paper. You ever see those old hand done renderings by architects with the colored markers over nicely drafted line art??? If they don't need to see the finr quality print yet... just the design elements & the colors, if they don't know how you usually present stuff, they may be just fine approving from that format, & being told that the "expensive" color proofs come AFTER approval. (kinda makes sense almost... well the "expensive" part is a lie... but helps make it make sense)
getting prints from Kinko's sounds real good too. I also think you should just get a new printer... but you could see if HP still does what they did when my first 686 went down. It was out of warrenty, but they took $60 over the phone... rushed out a freshly refurbished identical model printer (that uses that ink you just bought) & I returned mine in their old box so they could refurbish it... so when someone else... years later finally wanted my old printer... they could send it to you

I know this ain't the best solution but..Get a new one & Charrrrrge it! Thinking this way has me $8K under in credit cards, but they're a life saver in times like this!
My old 722 died. Got an 842 piece of crap. Died. I just bought a business jet 1100. & I guess its ok, a little on the loud side, but Ok.
Wish I could be of some serious help. G'luck!

Good idea Doug. But my plotter pen dried up! haha Yesterday the client needed a quick sketch for the zoning officer. Thank God I had printed out a proof. He's using it.
These logos are both approved and only waiting for the final "camera ready" prints. And you know me & my WONDERFUL Gerber system...I'd try to put it on a disc, but you all know how that goes...
I am sick of whining about being broke. I am gonna just go charge a new printer. (I charge groceries at Christmas!) Someone even offered to ship me their old printer! (Thanks René)
Felix, baby, I feel for ya. But my credit debt oughta hit 12 grand (more than my yearly profit!) this month!
I even got emails from kind folks wanting to help me figure out a business strategy. The only strategy that seems to be smart right now is to emulate Dan (do what I love, do it well, and charge accordingly) and Brian the Brush (keep on keepin' on)
I am not gonna whine any more! I am gonna pull myself up by my garter belt, plaster a smile on my face, and get my act together. My garage heater is cooking and I have signs to PAINT....gotta love it. And while I'm painting my crappy 4E will be cutting vynull. And every time I run down to check it, I will give that printer a dirty look!
This too shall pass. Thanks for helping. Love yins. JILL
