You can find a photo of mine in the "Past Meets" section, under LETTER-RIP in Atlanta,IL. click thumb nail of "sign kit"
I specialize in "Custom On Location" work, where as the projects CAN NOT be brought to me! Such as... Boats Basketball Courts Billboards Walls Windows Swimming Pools Etc.
Would your book include these types of SIGNS?
As far as the"HISTORY OF" goes. In Spain, first wall job on a cave was done there Later ALL signs were cut out in the shapes of said business' Next was carved language Later, out west they were painted on roof SHINGLES (hence Hanging your shingle out) hope this helps.

.....There's a pic of me in front of my 10x16 portable building in an article about single working Mom's in Signcraft magazine around 1990 or so. . . my little girl is in the pic an' she was around 9 then and she's 22 now . . . how's that for history, . . . I have some pics of where I added a giant "porch" 16x32 between the portable and my house . . .I built it too tall(16') an' cried like a little kid the first time it rained 'cuz rain blew right in . . . so when I got done cryin' I added 6'x32' awnings all the way down each side as well as a "loft" at the back end to store stuff.. It looked like some kind of weird aircraft but it worked perty good. I made a roll-up "door" arrangement with a 10'x16' tarp on the front with a piece of PVC on ropes . . . that worked out good for a coupl'a years. I have pictures of it. . . .then in 2000 I got a 30x40 building with real roll-up doors and tho't I died and went to heaven. I tore the big porch down and built it on front of the new shop. I have no idea where all the stuff came from that I filled this new shop with. I have tons of shelves an' space an' no room. Like George Carlan s'ed, I need to build more stuff for my stuff, which is multipling like rabbits. Everytime I take some stuff to the dump or fire pit, more stuff has replaced it. Do you suppose you could find a place in the historical documentation to address this irony?
I have pictures of the building but not all of the stuff because I do not have a camera with wide-lens panoramic capabilities...'cuz.... there is just too much stuff.
I think you have a great idea and I kno' you'll have a lotta fun persuing this adventure Lots'a luck.

Hi John, Great idea. Have you seen the book "Fastastic Trucks"? It's a book on custom truck painting and customizing. The cover have a oversized picture of a truck lettered and striped by Tom Kelly (Kelly & Sons, The Crazy Painters) The book is out of print, but you can pick one up at Amazon. PS I'll send you out some pics too.

Thanks for the replys.I would like to see and add a section just for the women of sign painting.I have never seen a book that touches on the women of the signpainting world. So all the women out there try to get me some pics of your shops old and new.
Thinking of all the articles in SC and SOTT, old shop photos, , and all the forgotten photos in relatives attics/ basements, of "old uncle Bill, he was a signpainter"..... The mind boggles.
