Our church is currently getting a complete interior repaint. Gold leaf was used on the decorative trim. Quite a bit of the gold leaf needs to be freshened up but not all. We've been asked to try to match the gold leaf with a metallic paint. One Shot metallic gold is too dark. Is there a metallic paint out there that closely resembles the gold leaf? Can the regular gold metallic paint be lightened up to match the gold leaf? If so, what would you use?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Paula

As far as i know.... NOTHING will match gold leaf!

Bronze powders are available in different shadesw/hues that will come close, but will tarnish and darken with age.

Since only some of the work needs redoing...why mess around with paint? Do it right!

Just my 2 cents worth!

I have never found a paint that comes close. Years ago, my shop foreman came up with a five word poem that pretty well sums it up:

Gold's Gold,
and...
Paint ain't!

The best match I have found to match gold is One-Shot 111-L Metallic Brass. It does not dry with the streaks like Metallic Gold and in my opinion looks better. True, it does not have the shine of gold but may work for you.

Check out "IMITATION gold leaf". (Call Sepp leaf in NY)

It comes packaged like real gold, metal leaves in books and packs. ( It is really some kind of brass I think.) Like VARIGATED leaf, it goes on tackier size than gold since it's heavier. It's real cheap, and church friendly. Looks very simular to real. Interior only and needs to be cleared.

I agree with Si. If you were re-doing the entire job, you may use an alternative material, but you said you are matching some of the existing gold! You can only match Gold with Gold!!

[Thanks]

Thank you to all who posted. We appreciated your feedback. We will be using gold leaf on the touch ups on the gold leaf part.

Hiya Lee and Paula,
I recently read an article in Sign Builder where Butch Anton mentioned that he liked Chromatics gold paint compared to others because it looked more like real gold.
I feel gold leaf is the only way to go. In 20 years you won't have to be restoring the gold paint.

Havin' fun,

Checkers

That leaf WR mentioned was used quite a bit in churches and Cathedrals, auditoriums, etc., as an alternative to real gold. It is, I believe, aluminum leaf that has been colored...folks used to call it dutch gold. If you were looking at it, say in a ceiling, you couldn't tell it wasn't gold, but side by side with gold the gold would look richer. It is meant for interior use only. I would make a small test piece with gold leaf and hold it up next to what you are touching up to see if it matches, because it could be the above mentioned stuff you are dealing with.
