these things have been perplexing me for some time now. BTW, I'm using 10
1. can you temporarily "snap to objects" by using a shortcut key, or do you always have to go to view, then check "snap to objects". I've looked for a shortcut and have found none.
2. can you do a radial transparency that is transparent towards the edge, and opaque in the middle. The only one I can figure out is the inverse of the above.
thanks in advance

I don't get the first question, maybe I don't use that feature?
As far as #2, draw a circle, go to the bottom flyout, below the outline flyout, the fill tool, it is the one that does blende & fades, looks like a paint can, click on fill tool , chose radial, then chose the colors you want & the edgeband (sharpness of the blend)If you want the edge transparent, use the edge band to pull the edge in a bit.
I am doing this from memory, and yours may be set up differently.

Also Dave, I found where you can printout Corel's shortcut keys. It was like a bunch of pages if I remember right. I found it in help, shortcut keys. You can assign your own as well, but check there first.
Edit: I was just in Corel looking for shortcuts Ctrl+S is save & Shift+S is simple wireframe. It has to be there but my printed shortcuts are at the shop
Cheers

On the first question, go to "view" (in Corel 10) and check "snap to objects", then draw two identical boxes. Now, if you use the pick tool, and drag one of the boxes near the other one, it automatically "snaps" right up against the other box, with perfect allignment.
If I have fifty objects on a page and I just want to "snap" two of them together, is there an easier way than going to "view" and checking "snap to objects", then move the objects where I want them, and then going back to "view" and uncheck "snap to objects" to turn the feature off.
Number 2. You are on track, but not exactly what I'm after. I only want a single color object, with a radial transparency. For simplicity, lets make it a red circle. If you use the tranparency tool, and in the properties bar select "radial", the center of the circle becomes transparent, and the edges remain red. I want to invert the transparency so that the center is red, and the edges become transparent. Hope this helps.
Oh yeah, I printed out the shortcuts some time back, and use them religiously, aren't they great when you get them memorized. I get a real hoot out of anyone watching me who is computer illiterate, they just can't figure out why I keep hitting all of those buttons, especially when you hold cntrl, and then hit another key.
thanks.

The one on the left is simply the black cross, with a red circle over it that is transparent.
The one on the right had to be done with the interactive fill tool, so that the circle is actually not transparent. It is just red in the center, and white on the edge. The cross is transparent in the center, and is on top of the circle.
If there were several complex objects that you wanted to be seen "under the circle" it would be impossible to do in this method.

the transparancy tool works just like the interactive fill tool does with the little boxes of colour at either end
a black box meaning totaly transparent and the white box meaning total solid colour
now just click n drag(with the left mouse button)any of the grey scale in the colour pallet(black to white) and drop it into the box to effect the transparent change you require
simply put... if you want the middle transparent then make the box in the middle black and the one on the outside of the object white
like this
the first pic shows the solid colour near the edge and the 100% transparent in the middle
the second pic shows me just about to change the white box into a 60% transparent (grey)
the last pic shows what happens if you drag n drop another colour (level of transparency onto the line between the black n white boxes
have some fun playing around with this tool and you will see what I mean
cheers gail

VIOLA! Gail, you hit the nail on the head. What I was missing was the little "edit transparency" button at the very left of the toolbar. That allowed me to swap the colors, and make the edge transparent and the middle solid. Thanks
Problem two solved........now back to problem one.
anyone got any ideas? Actually I've been doing some house designing and some things I want to "snap" to a certain object, and other things I don't. It's just a pain to do it the long way.......
Thanks again everyone for your input on the transparency. You guys are great!

Well, it sounds like you've already got it all figured out. You can assign hot keys to pretty much any function in CorelDraw via the customization menu. I use the "o" key to turn snap to objects on and off, the "g" key to toggle snap to guides.
I usually change whatever Corel's default shortcut keys are to something that I can remember. I've got the "c" key set to convert to curves, and another one that saves me a lot of time is "w" for a quick basic weld. Also "h" for horizontal alignment and "v" for vertical seems much easier to remember than the default "c" for centre and "e" for equator.

I'll try to maybe do a step by step of what I'm actually doing shortly. I've been honing my illustration skills in corel. i.e. drawing cars, waterdrops, etc. The transparency tool (now that I have it completely figured out) will let me put lighting highlites on complex objects, such as a water drop that already has things reflecting in it.
The "snap to" will allow me to do things like placing a square which represents say, a cabinet, into a floor plan, so that it goes directly against a wall, or another cabinet.
I'm learning too, and luvin' it!
later...........dave.....
