I'm having a little bit of a problem here. I buid "massive" signs for the Ontario Highways, I'm talking legend that is up to 48" x 44 feet...
I use Adobe Illustrator 10, with Mimaki "Fine Cut for Illustrator" plug in software and a 48" Mimaki plotter. My question is this. If I am cutting my name "Hotchkies" I need to ensure that the plotter cuts in the right order, as in the "H" then the "o" then the hole in the "o" then the "t", then the "c" etc etc.. I can do this by typing the name, creating outlines, then highlighting the "s" and bringing to the front, then highlighting the "e" and bringing to the front, and so on, working backwards until I bring the "H" to the front. Then it cuts in the "right" order.

Is there an easier way to do this?? The amount of vinyl I cut is unbelieveable, so this becomes very time consuming. Help

now you lost me....you sayin that when you send object(hotchins)to plot file....it dont start with the H, but pulls out the vinyl, and starts the cutting from the S???????
if thats what its doin...it the program your using. i had pro-cut, and this was a good feature of it, so this way you dont get half way thru the cut from the front...and then vinyl runs off track.

No, what I'm saying is that there is no way to predict what it is going to cut first, it may cut the "H" and then the outside of the "O" and continue on, then come back and cut the inside of the letters, and if it is out by a mm at the start, it is all whacked out by the end, so I end up with odd looking letters

Bruce,
I use Illustrator 9, 10, CS and I leave the object to cut as a compound path. In my cutting options there is also "sort feature" ...with this option I select sort from left to right and my cutting seems to go as you would like yours to do. I know if I ungroup or remove compound path then this will also happen to me. It might cut one letter in the lower left and then go all the way to the end and cut a letter. This is super slow —not to mention that it can cause tracking issues on long runs.
Hope this helps...
