It must not have gotten CBS too upset, aren't both timberlake and jackson scheduled to appear on the Grammy awards this weekend....carried by CBS? Of course a lot of people may tune in just to see if they apoligize or do something crazy again....more viewers=more advertising $$$$$ for CBS

With an ever increasingly jaded audience....they must go to "the next step" to gain "favor and fame" !!!!!
The ancient Incas (or was it the Myans)had a game reminicient of basketball.....where the players REALLY tried to win....becaus all of the losing team were beheaded! Let's not forget the Roman "bread & circus", where they fed criminals and Christians to the lions.
In our time we have such programs as "Fear Factor" and it's ilk. What's next? Squashing criminals and welfare recipients with "Big Foot"???
We have the choice of watching, not watching, or protesting to those in charge!

I think a discussion on Ken Park which I saw last night, is more reflective of the type of society we live in....maybe its banned or heavily censored in the US.
An eyeopener anyway....and makes the JJ and JT thing very small in the big picture today...I know ones fiction and ones fact...but it makes you wonder how much in touch you are with whats really going on.
This is probably not the place to discuss that....

OK, I've been quiet through this thing. Here's my take:
True, in Europe, TV is different. And, I am somewhat disappointed that that two teams who were skilled enough to make it to the SuperBowl are being ignored. I feel our top 40 music is a much bigger travesty,
IE: Songs by Missy Elliott. Pure, unadulterated trash, (the "work it" song) and yet some of you will buy or download this stuff for your kid and hand it to them for their listening pleasure. That is sick. And that is just one of many in the sess pool of talentless spoiled rich "artists" we continue to support with concert ticket and CD sales. Then we are surprised when our kid becomes a parent at 16 years old.
The Janet Jackson thing could be a teachable moment. Everybody agrees the whole "flavor" of the halftime show was undesirable....CHANGE THE CHANNEL. It is easier than ever to do so, everybody has a remote control, and our kids learn that it's ok not to be spoon fed by the media......I agree with Cam on this one.
Regards,

I agree with you Rick, except that the "change the channel" wouldn't have necessarily done any good with this event. How do you know that a dimwit like JT is going to reach over and rip the top off of JJ? It just all of a sudden happened?

I thought they sacrificed the WINNING team. When I visited Chizen Itza back in the 80s, the jury was still out on the issue.
Everybody says the whole show reaked of inuendo and suggestion. The time to change the channel was way before the hooter "fell" out. Then, our kids would have seen our disgust and been protected somewhat too.

Rick, I totally agree with "Change the Channel" I do it every day. And, I can guarante you that I don't downlad that stuff, nor do I buy the CD's, nor does it play anywhere in my vacinity. However, the whole point of "change the channel" would be great if there was some kind of warning. No one, not one person ever expected to have a simulated asault on a woman and the exposing of her breast during a world famous American tradition of a family watching a football game.
The entire event was a farce from the beginning. Starting with the booting of the US Marine color guard right after the Anthem, the shock commercials, the vulgar words to the songs, the suggestive pelvic movements, and of course the hooter shot.
Time to spank them all. Punish them hard. These are talentless, cookie cuttered, manufactured, artistic terrorists make it that good real entertainers and shows can't be trusted again. The grammys's and who knows what other show will be tape delayed.

I became "TV free in '03" when I cancelled cable service about a year ago. Even up to then I couldn't stomach the network bilge of stupid comedies and formula-driven dramas, not to mention the endless hammering of advertisers to sell cars, beer, pills, and fast food. I do occasionally watch a sporting event like the World Series or the Super Bowl at a friend's home. I admit to missing the JJ and JT halftime stunt (it was on, but silly MTV clowns just don't hold my attention.)
But the thing I've discovered is, there IS life without TV - there's books, music, friends, conversation, outdoor activities, REAL LIFE. And it's not boring or dull; I don't find myself wishing I could watch TV instead of all the other things I could be doing. Yet I'm the first to admit that having it is addictive - it's easier to sit around in front of it with a blank mind and let the damn thing do my thinking for me.
What I've discovered about TV is how witless and predictable it is, how everything seems to be written for the attention span of a hyperactive child, and that every moment of it is designed to keep you sitting still while someone tries to sell you something, by convincing you that you can't live without whatever it is, even though you never heard of it before.
Look at prescription drug ads. To watch them you soon believe that everyone has allergies, heartburn, and can't get it up. We spend billions in blood and treasure to fight a "war on drugs", then let TV tell us (and our kids) that all our problems can be solved with the right pills. The contradictions are so blatant and obvious, and the marketing so transparent and insulting - but no one gets outraged until some skank's tit comes out during the Super Bowl. Is it any wonder the networks don't take the public seriously? They have mountains of evidence that we, as a society, will accept almost anything they care to shovel, from pills to politicians.
The root of all evil isn't money. It's television.

Cam - sorry about the Signgold (another thread). We cut back on our cable to the very basic (i wanted to keep the cable for the internet, we only have channels 1-23). The only channels i miss are discovery and sometimes the history channel - my wife used to watch HGTV a lot but it always got me into trouble of all the things i'm not doing around here... Anyway on a slightly tangential thread, we have so much in this country that we invent problems and then products to solve them... here are a few of my pet peeves Storage facilities - throw the extra stuff out! Cosmetic stuff such as botox - why tamper with mother nature! TV makes us think we should all look like the "perfect" person, perfect skin, perfect weight, perfect hair... personally i don't know anyone that looks like that (maybe i just have ugly friends... but i sure love them the way they are) Toothbrush cleaner - just saw a commercial for this one, never knew my toothbrush was dirty. I could go on, but you get my drift.
Anyway, i'm off to Joe Cieslowski's Chisel Jam in CT. See you all on Sunday night!

I totally agree with what Steve Racz and Doug Allan had to say.
Before the "garment malfunction" happened I thought the whole 1/2 show sucked. Bad. I have to say I'd rather my kids saw a woman's breast than the gratuitous violence that's shown on prime time now. I'm more offended by, and would rather not have my kids hear/see, the lyrics, crotch grabbing, flag wearing, talentless, losers than seeing a woman's breast.
There was a story a couple of weeks ago about an Organic food market that had on their magazine shelves at the register, a parenting magazine with a picture on the cover of a woman breastfeeding her child. A female customer got offended and the store pulled the magazine. It last just a short while before the store decided to put them back saying that the image is one of the most natural things in nature. Good for them!

I have to admit, I never saw the halftime show....but I did see photos on the Drudge Report of Jackson's tit and read the entire story .....
So Rick, you have a point...I had no idea the rest of the half-time show was decadent as well...so you're "change the channel" would work as soon as you saw the halftime show going south.
Cheers.

Janet Jackson has been banned from the upcoming Grammy's show, and the Grammy people are adding a 5 minute delay to the program so they can undermine impromptu antics and political speeches from the holly-weirdos.
Hey, freedom of speech is alive...but if they want to offend people, let them do it on their own dime and in the proper forum.
It is illegal after all, to yell "fire" in a movie theater, or to say, "boy, I'd really like to blow up this plane" when you're boarding for a flight.
