I have just upgraded my system to a 2500 AMD and the computer keeps freezing when i try and open files has anyone heard of this?

Are you running win98? I don't believe that Signlab 4.95 will run on anything higher than that.

yes win 98 with no other software loaded yet so there should be no conflicts?

Ive heard rumors about some graphics programs using having problems with AMD CPU's. However I have not tested this myself nor can I give you a specific link to read. Something about how the floating point calcualtions are handled. That is supposedly why many engineering houses use Intel chips instead of AMD.
