I am meeting with one of Exira's sales reps next week to look at the product and then bring it back to our studio test it. Like you, I've heard this song before with Medex.
I will report back to this site when I hear the details on what THEY say the difference is between them and Medex. I'll be working on an article about different substrates for SB - and this will likely be covered in it.
Until then . . . my skepticism rules me. Like Butch Anton once said, "why spend all your time waterproofing a supposedly waterproof board?" when he was asked about Medex. Exactly. Extira has a HUGE perception to overcome.

I put a raw, sample piece in a bucket of water for 4 months and it appears to be the same now as when it first went into the bucket. It certainly didn't swell up like medex.
We've done a few signs with it that are around the corner from us, so I can monitor them from time to time. So far, so good.
We had a little piece sandblasted as a test. My sandblasted said it took him longer to blast my little sample than the 3 pieces of signfoam I gave him. But it kind of created an interesting background texture.

i guess to test it you should prime it then make some kind of marks or holes in it to see how it reacts when a portion of it is exposed...i would love to feel comfortable using it because it routs like butter...heavy as a baastid though.

no, but i can tell you what happens to my little test piece in 6 months....cold running brook, below zero temps...then springtime will be wet & rainy, then warm, then hot...if its gonna explode, i will see the beginnings of something wicked by then...i'll keep ya posted. let's hope for the best.
