I am wondering if anyone can direct me towards a web-site that would have instructions or an installation manual for Pan Channel Letters and the Electrical Diagrams and/or Load Diagrams??
I have been comissioned to do some Pan Channel Letters that are 18" in height. The sign has two words each having 5 characters... 'BLACK PEARL'. My client has chosen to use Neon Illumination.
This is the first time I will be installing a sign like this, so, needless to say it will be an experience, but I want it to be a positive one. I have done many back lit signs and double sided hanging signs... but, these are as simple as hooking up two wires to the transformer.
I am aware that I need GTO(high voltage wire), Flex Conduit, Connection Boxes and Wire Nuts; however I have not ever wired a sign in 'series'. Although, I did rewire my parent's basement... but that is not even close. Or is it?
I was in a store this week that had the wiring visible and a made a diagram, but I don't know where the lead and returns were...so I am a little puzzled??
ps- I have a State Licensed Electrician that I contract to when I want the connections hooked up for my electrical signs, but to save some dough I want to wire the sign myself and then have him connect the live feed.... by Code.
Any recomendations would be appreciated. Thank you!
Craig

There are so many variables involved you can't just learn this stuff from a website.
It used to involve a proper apprenticeship; but I guess nobody has time to learn anything properly anymore.
Sorry but I learned my neon skills the old way...I suggest you do the same before you burn down a building or someone gets killed.

You're not gonna like it, but I've got three recommendations for you: 1) have your skilled electrician check out your parent's basement; 2) put on your asbestos underwear 3) post your question on www.SignWeb.com - classified - neon and lighting. You'll quickly understand the importance of wearing those flame-proof shorts.
If you proceed with this project at your current skill level, your probabability of creating a catastrophic fire or injury is near certain. At the very least you're guaranteed to put yourself, your customer, and your electrician friend in legal jeopardy.
Sorry for the downer reply, but this isn't something to tackle without skill and experience.

Dennis and Jack have valid arguments, but if you are as determined as we were to get involved in this medium, I found it to be extremly easy to do once a full appreciation of products necessary to mount, wire and install neon was established.
The transformer load is the most critical and is determined by the amount and kind of glass used. The local code didctates what elements are required for connection, seal-tight, gto flashing etc. Check with your electrical buddy for guidance in this area.

Rest assured, I will have a State Licensed and Insured Electrician assist me with the job to supervise and inspect the electrical connections.
The Transformers and Neon have been designed and tested by the manufacturer, in addition to, the transformers having been designed by the manufacturer for the required electrical load, all of which, have SGFPs.
I truely appreciate each and every one of your responses and concerns regarding this project. By no means would I want to jeapordize the lives of others, nor the livelyhood of my business.
Thanks again.
