1 Shot -- always a big supporter of all things letterhead and a major player in the sign painting industry has responded. When the EPA caused the sign paint manufacturers to alter their paints around a decade ago, many of us expressed concern that our favorite paint had been compromised. We expressed these concerns directly to anyone who would listen. If we hadn't have maybe nothing would have changed. Apparently they did listen just as they did when we requested additional colors, and they have come out with new clears that are compatible with their current paints that are designed to make these paints last longer. I for one couldn't be more pleased. I'm all about trying to get brushable, rollable paint to last longer and I'm tired of having to have 3 paint technologies do the job I'm seeking when 1 used to do it all. I met Frank Manning this summer at Tomahawk and found him to be knowledgeable and helpful. He said then that this was in the works and it has finally arrived. He told me to pass his e-mail along. So for you 1 Shot users, here's his reply:

Bill, yep, I was that masked stranger at the panel picnic.....But Yes, we have 5 new clears just out a few weeks ago. We are getting ready launch an ad campaign and info blitz. Some of our distributors have the product now. We are introducing a new Anti-Graffiti clear (2 Part) in both gloss & matte formats and available in both Qt & Gal kits. We are also introducing an automotive style 2K clear called "UCO" (Urethane Clear Overcoat) that are as tough as the Anti-Graffiti clears (will resist 100+ wipes of MEK) but don't have the special additives to resist graffiti. The UCO is also available in both gloss & matte and come in Qt & Gal sizes. The last new clear is a "sister" product to our popular 4005 UV Acrylic Clear. It is a Satin version of the 4005. The part # is 4015...available in Gal, Qts & 4015A Aerosol. Feel free to pass this info on as we will be "launching" the info soon. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Keep your brushes wet and your vinyl sticky.....Frank Manning, 1Shot

Thats good news.. Can you put in one request too them.. Have them put a full color chart on their website. I couldnt find my color chart and the one Scooter did is incomplete (Not Complaining Scooter) I spent an Hour looking for Copper Metal Paint yesterday after the Paint supply told me it would be 3 weeks before I could get it I called a diffent supplier and the said 1 Shot made it.. I was supprised as it wasnt on their chart and they dont list their product on their own website. Kinda makes it a useless website.

Thanks for sharing. Products we need from a company we trust. I hope 1-Shot realizes the faith we have in Frank.

William, the color chart Scooter put on here is one he made himself just to simulate 1 Shot colors for purposes of making sketches on your computer. I assume that's why there's no metallic colors, because your printer isn't going to do metallics. Your paint supplier should have actual charts that you can get along with your next order or contact 1 Shot thru the Letterville merchants and maybe they'll send you some.

Suggestion: put a date on the color charts. Somehow I ended up with 2 or 3 different versions of color charts and I have to compare to see which has more colors to know which is the current one. I think I finally got rid of the old ones, but it drove me nuts.

As for the clears, hopefully my suppliers will decide to carry the new ones. Seems they don't like carrying full brands and it's quite annoying.

Paint fumes have undoubtedly blurred my memory once again ( I don't know how much longer I can use that excuse. ) How many color charts, and which color charts? Is this from Scooter's post? My math is fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy!!!!!!!!!

Having just read Frank's response, I can say I too am glad to hear they have these new clears to try.I am assuming they are brusheable over one shot, or are the 2-part versions only for spraying? I'm gonna try to get some asap for some trial testing. Thanks Bill for posting.

I wonder if the UCO clear is strong enough to paint bike tanks with. It would be nice to stick with 1-shot paints and have a durable clear that won't wrinkle the paint. Can you sand and polish the clear?

In response to can the UCO be used on motor cycle tanks....yes it can. it's very solvent resistant. It can also be wet sanded & buffed. As in auto style clears, the finer the final sand grade used the easier the buffing will be... On applying over 1Shot colors, yes it can be done, but we (1Shot)recommend adding hardner #4007 to the paint before overcoating with any of the clears. Enough time needs to elapse to allow thorough drying of the paint. Spraying is the best way to apply the new clears, but they can be brushed or rolled (rolled clear should be followed with a brushing to pop bubbles). If your not sure of your dry time window, spray, brush or roll a very light coat over your work. Allow approximately 30 minutes flash time before applying your next coat and another 30 minutes before your 3rd coat if needed. If there are additional questions...give us at 1Shot a call. Again...it is very important to be sure that the color coat is thoroughly dry before applying clearcoats....no matter whose it is.

Well I find this news exciting.
I'll be looking for the specs on how long the clears are expected to extend the color lightfastness, and if one wet coat of clear over one base coat of dried color is sufficient, or if multiple base and top coats are necessary.

A real boost is we have just been given a way to make any 1Shot color into a SATIN. Pretty cool.
