I can't believe that I have to come on here and ask such a simple question but I just cannot figure this out for illustrator?

I am trying to allign two shapes centre to centre using the horizontal centre and vertical centre allign buttons. I have the "allign to artboard" turned off because I do not want the objects to centre on the artboard. One object is positioned on the work surface were I want it to stay and I want to allign the second one onto it centre to centre. No matter how I select them, instead of just the one object moving, they both move the same amount towards each other. It works properly if I allign them by top, bottom, or right or left justification, but if I use centre justify they both move.

This is such a simple function in other programs like Omega or Corel, but I sure as heck can't get it to work here.

HELP!!! what simple stupid thing am I missing!

Bevin,

First click on the shape you want to have stay where it is, then hold down the "shift" key to select the second (and subsequent)shape(s).

NOW,....hold down the "ctrl" key and click again on the first shape (the one that will stay where it is at) and then click on your alignment buttons and all the shapes but the first will move to align to the first one.

Bevin,
That's not a stupid question at all but it's one that I've never though to ask. I've been an Illustrator user from version 3 and wasn't aware that there was a way to do this as simple as it is.

Thanks Todd, we never stop learning!

Todd; thanks for your response, but I still can't seem to get it to work. Is there some other setting that I am missing. I have artboard and preview bounds both turned off. I keep trying different things but both objects still move when I do a centre allign.

OOPS!!! Might have jumped the gun at saying I could still not get it to work. I think I had a few other objects grouped with my selection that I was not aware of and the centre was off. Got it figured out now.

Thanks for your help!

PS: I hate trying to learn new programs (HAHA!!!)

glad it's working for you all. Actually this function of aligning one object to another without the first one moving out of it's space is a fairly recent improvement to AI. I think it might have been enacted in Version 9...but it was always a sore spot for users before then.

I know you weren't able to do it in Version 7 and 8 for sure...and it was something that I always couldn't believe wasn't possible at that time.

I use AI every day, but had used CorelDraw for years before that and I still say CorelDraw is way ahead of Illustrator feature-wise....

Enjoy and feel free to ask away if you have any other questions. [Smile]

Thanks, that will help me too. It's something that has frustrated me too whenever I try to work in Illustrator.
