Alan, maybe you are serious, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Far from going nuts I think I have gained an education that not only has improved my upcoming sign, but the hands-on implementation of everyones great ideas has left me with a personal satisfaction in my own contribution to the finished design, as well as driving home the various lessons learned in layout & color concepts.
I have no doubt several letterheads could have come up with an even better sign, but then the next time someone says "nice sign... did you make it?" I wouldn't be able to give them that stupid sarcastic look!

In the next post I'm unveiling the sign many of you helped me redesign long ago. At that time I had compiled several of the steps along the way... so for a convenient at-a-glance look at the before & after... I bumped my unveiling down one post so I could recap the old steps shown on the 40 odd posts leading up to this one.

well, I knew it would be a while... never would have guessed it would be almost 4 years though.
As others had commented, I too was very intriqued how a design could evolve so well on-line through several incarnations, thanks to several bits of good advice. (Back then I was very new to this site, well I've stuck around & accomplished several firsts since this thread... like using signfoam for example.)
I will post the finished sign in the portfolio page too, but this thread really offers a unique view of a group process helping an individual, so I thought others may also enjoy re-reading it now that I've got the new sign done. I think my prompt posting of the suggested changes helped fuel the process & also helped me feel like a co-creator even while so much of the improvements in my logo came from the advice of others.
Another learning experience I've really had to apply myself on lately is delegating. For about 6 months now, I've been working with my first employee in 9 years (except for part time help from my wife years ago, & my step daughter more recently)
My full time helper Tony came here with 3 years signshop experience & a great attitude for learning new things as well as an exceptional discipline for doing all things well.
Although I determined every inch of the layout, colors, techniques & materials & selected each tool for each process & every nut & bolt... for the hands on work of this creation, I was grateful to have Tony applying his usual attention to detail on every cut, coat of paint, application of vinyl & carving of foam. While Tony can say he made this entire sign... I can be proud spearheading the process, but also the major breakthrough in learning to let go sometimes... an achievement through which many more good things will come for our clients & both of us in our future here at Island Sign!
