Hey everyone, I've got something to make your cold winter night more fun!!!! A logo design!
My business partner, Bob, is the owner of an hydroplane (raceboat)in the 5 litre class. I am also part of the team and we're racing all summer trough south east Cnada and northeastern USA.

We are now working on the new look of our boat and I am planning a new team logo to put on the truck and the crew suits. I've had two main ideas that i've work on but it seams that I hit the wall. (It is so harder to satisfy ourselves than the customers!!!)
 -
there are my things. I need to put the name of the boat (Sans-Façon). the number (ce28) or the class (5.0 Liter), and of course the "racing team" thing!!! Our mascot ( Mr.Mack) is the owner's Bulldog, and have to be part of that logo too!

If someone want to gimme advice you will be welcome!!!! If it would help to have a file to work with, you can download a corel 9 workfile of the logos here.

If any of your idea is kept, you gonna have the credit, like the aerodynamic guy in NZ who give us advises on the net, and get his name on the back of the boat!

Thanks for helping!

Marc...at first I thought.."Can't read it....doesn't work for me...."

Then I realized it was in French [Roll Eyes] lol!

It's got a lot of impact, how about adding two or three more colors?

Purple, green, yellow....?

WILD!!

A:)

Thanks Adrienne, sorry for the headache!

Whe are trying to stay within the 4 solid colors
to limit the cost for the embroydery (scuse the spelling, i'm french too!)But those colors can change.

The problem is to put all th info I need by keeping the "racing" spirit...

I'm keeping working on it on my side, I'll show you the developments...thanks

Salut Marc!

I would suggest keeping the logo as simple as possible. It will have more impact that way. You can always add another graphic in the same style to indicate the number and class of the boat.

Salut Jon!

Thanks for your interest!

We will go for the top one (with the big dog)
the image looks stronger.
But I have to put the class thing anyway, I'll stick with the APBA designation (ce28) the ce designate the class anyway. ( c=canadian & e is the fifth letter for the class; 5 liters)

If anyone have mora advice, we're close....

thanks...

How close to Maine will you be racing??????

Posted by Marc St.Denis (Member # 3329) on :

I think I'm close....look at this:

 -

With a bit of work and corel photopaint...

Gimme some news...

Steven, the closer to Maine seems to me to be Plattsburgh, NY or Riverview, New-Brunswick, dates still to determinate. the schedule is not approved yet. Thanks for your interest.

Yeah, yeah yeah..I know...

I'll remove the black outline from the main lettering to improve the readability.(LOL)

The thing is not closed yet..your comments are still welcome...Thanks

Increase the character spacing for improved legibility, otherwise cool, cool !

i like it, but i don't like the sunburst coming out behind the dog. the dog has a spikey collar, and then there is the sunburst, which is more spikieness. i'd suggest softening the sunburst or eliminating the spikes on the collar.

slightly off topic:
the first time i saw that cartoon of the bulldog was in a 1944 "How to Draw Animated Cartoons" book published by the Robert Foster company. I have a copy of the book and it sold back then for a buck. I've seen that same bulldog in countless other places, as well, but i think that's the first one.

Hi, I'm not sure if the pic worked, but I thought I would take a stab at it, it sounded like fun. If it didn't work, I could email it if you want.

I think the last one you posted looks pretty good but the sans facon is really hard to read. Too much red all around I think. It needs yellow or something????

What do I know? I stink at this stuff!

Marc,

I absolutely love your last one.
Amy's suggestion to add yellow is a good one.
I would make the red sunbursts yellow (a warm sunny yellow like one shot lemon yellow) ... keep the same prismatic effect on the rays too.
I think the black outline on the rays is alittle harsh, ... would like to see it in maybe a grey. (like in the sub-text and the dogs colour grey)

The dog is VERY cool! I think if you lighten up the stuff behind him, he'll lunge out of the picture alittle more.

LOVE it Marc ... nice job!

Nettie

For those who concern, the dog is from the Tramp's cd...

I'll do a couple more try but i'm quite fixed on it, for the colors, i'll try to stick with these cause of the reproduction cost on the apparel, but for the truck and the boat, I'm thinking of maybe a digital print instead of airbrushing it...

Stay tuned, I'll be back with new developments...

Thanks again

Glendon, I'm craving to see that pic, please email it to me....

I've done some slight changes according to the suggestions i've received:

 -

Gimme some feedback...

I alson wonders if I can get the "keepers of the craft" logo (the one Steve is using in background)
somewhere, I would like to put it on the boat for the collective work and the input you gave me...
I can merge the letterville in it too, like a sponsor...just a crazy idea...

seeya later..

If it's not too late and you don't mind an idea from a n00b, here's what I came up with.. I don't have Corel Draw 9 so I had to work with a .BMP image in Corel Draw 7 and I didn't have the font for the CE28 part but, I was thinking about putting that across the top in the same font as the "racing team" or maybe on the left side opposite the racing team..

Hmm, maybe someone can tell me how to add an image to a post.. That would help.. I don't have a place I can dump it to like a website or URL..

Marc,
I'd suggest working out a preliminary in black & white without the Corel photopaint bevels etc. It is often a good starting place. Also when you add color, if embroidery is part of the package, get a good version with flat colors (again no fancy 3D photopaint bevels etc.) After you have good black & white, & good 4 color embroidery version, then might be a better time ti trick out the fancy digital print version.

Bam, email your idea to Marc, then he may post it if he wants too.

Thanks Doug,
I though my post was dead...!! lol

Being myself a graduated graphic designer!!! I learn the design everyday since I left school!
I did pass the black and white stage on this job since november. The truth is that i'm working on that logo , spare time, since last august!

I'm pretty happy with the last results, and after talking the the apparel sponsor, it seems that we'll have only minor adjustments to do, I'm taking his words I dont know anything about embroidery....

Being happy don't mean that this is closed, and I will be happy if BamBam would send me these ideas...I received some and have examinated them all with close attention...maybe i'll come with a completely changed logo...

Thanks everyone for helping...I'll pay you back when i will have a chance, be assured.

Where is the bevel effect in photopaint?

Posted by Amy Brown (Member # 1963) on :

Hey Bob, I'm guessing it's an EyeCandy 4000 plug-in.

Years ago, I had an opportunity to attend a Mark Baty Color Workshop. There was tons of information, but I did come away with a couple color theories that were really helpful in choosing colors.

The first is...

Light colors come forward while dark colors fall back.

The second is....

Warm colors come forward while cool colors tend to fall back.

These 2 simple ideas are very powerful. Let's see how they relate to this design. The Sans Falcon is the most forward text in this design and therefore a light, warm color like yellow should work well, especially if it is outlined with a dark color.

Look at the heavy white outline around the above text. Squint your eyes a bit and you can actually see the white coming forward. It may be competing with your yellow copy. The eye wants to "read" the white first. Light colors come forward.

The doggie is sitting behind the Sans Falcon and is the midground. Is that even a valid term? Try a tan or some other color in the middle range. What you already have may be fine.

Wish we knew what the background color will be. A dark color would work best with the ideas we are talking about, but that may not be in the works. Here's one solution.

Ever letter a mid colored vehicle? Something gray, light blue or orange. Nothing really seems to offer the high contrast we want. Let's apply our color theory. Choose a light color for your main copy and use a heavy dark outline. Your outline will make your lettering stand out far more than it would on the midtone background.

Does any of this make any sence? Doug Downey had an excellant article on this sort of stuff in SignCraft a few issues ago.

Did I mention letter weight? Naaa...next time. [Smile]

Bob, it is an eye candy plug-in, Amy has targetted right!

Steeve, your color theory is simple and right, never taught about it before but reading it makes great sense..the same as lettering in a window...

p.s. Bob, i'll look at your e-mail a bit later, why did you dont post it on the board????

seeya later...

Marc I would have posted but was really busy and didnt have time. But I wanted to let you look at it and fool with it yourself. Wish I had more time to play with it. There are so many possibilities

 -
also a photo of the boat and the truck...

Hope it'll help...come back later with the images Paul and Bob sent me...

Here's a link to Doug Downey's article in SignCraft Magazine. Doug does a much better job at explaining the color ideas I talked about earlier.
