The recent posts concerning hand lettering here in the portfolio page has inspired me to post this little project.
I did this for Adam Scholljegerdes the young man we employ here at our shop, whom he and his dad are avid fishers.
I had this HDU fish I carved at a letterhead meet a few years ago lying around the shop unfinished and I thought this little fish would be perfect for a panel for his last name. He's got the same goofy look that most people have when they see or hear his last name.
Anyway, when Arthur Vanson stated in his post: Signwriting, as simple as it gets,
" our trade allows – indeed encourages – us to appreciate letterforms and play games with them"
how true those words are and how appropriately it applies to this project.
The letterforms displayed in this project is based off a simple block letter. I just played with each and every character and fit them together for a casual look as I painted them.
Well then, enough talk, here's the pic...

Dave, that is brilliant! It encapsulates all we've been saying about painting signs. Perfect lettering and a 3D element that adds a dimension rather than confusing the issue. I love that fish!

That is awesome Dave. You should turn that into your next font. You captured the name perfect with your lettering. What's cool is the letters compliment the fish and vice versa. Have a great day,
-Charles

Thanks for the comments.
Charles, I have considered turning it into a font...perhaps not as animated. I'm just not sure how sellable it would be. With the amount of time it takes to create a font, would it be worth it? I guess the only way to find out is to do it.

Neato. It's perfect! Now how the heck do you pronounce that surname? It's too big of a mouthful for Mr. Fish! Love.....Jill
