We started building this project back in October of '07 and finally got it installed this week.
The concept started last summer when my employer wanted to revamp the business image a bit, and with a name like Galaxy Graphix, a space theme seemed to be the obvious way to go. We worked up the design to fit within the city sign regulations though it took a little persuasion to finally get a permit out of them.
My employer let me pretty much take over from that point on so from the construction point of view, this was my baby. It was worked on in between jobs for the most part though I did get the odd full day on it.
The rocket is hard coated (Magic Smooth) Styrofoam mounted on a 2 1/2 inch steel square tube. The details on the rocket are a from variety of products including PVC plastic for the fins, Magic Sculpt for the rivets & shaped parts on the rocket body. Its painted with a combination of Krylon Fusion and One Shot paints. The chains supporting the oval logo are welded so the oval sign won't swing in winds. The oval is hard coated foam and is 24"x56"x6" thick. The chrome mirror letter was router cut Alumipanel that was then laminated to PVC. All the other lettering is router cut PVC. The parts of the project not done in house were the routering of the letters and the welding and fabrication of the support pole/chains.
This is certainly the most interesting and creatively rewarding sign project I've been involved with in my 25 years of sign making.
I have to thank Grandpa Dan, though I've not met him yet, for providing the inspiration to tackle this project. I doubt I would have attempted this type of project if it hadn't been for the many inspirational posts he's provided here at Letterville.
I also have to thank my employer, Claudette Campbell for believing in me when I said we could do this, and for providing all the necessary tools, equipment and supplies without hesitation when they were required. I'm sure we went way over budget but she didn't blink even once.

First off...thank you so much for all the positive comments.
It was indeed, a very fun project as well as a huge challenge considering we've never done this type of sign before. I'll admit that it had me scratching my head many times throughout the process.
Of course now I'm completely addicted....I'm really hoping we can turn this into many more unique jobs in the future. Working on "normal" signs this past week had me bored to tears.

Really, really neat! When I first saw it I thought, "That oval is going to be dancing all over the place"!! Then I read the welded link part. SMOOTH MOVE!

The only thing that bugs me about the whole thing, is that the cloud/blast looks like rocks ( or hemroids ) The rest is just top notch!!!
