Inspired by "Ace of Cakes" on the Food Network and my sister having a birthday coming up, I decided to pick up some rolled fondant cake covering (like icing you roll out and make into shapes) and try my hand at this little cake. The cake is from a box mix, baked in a cookie sheet then layered up after cutting out several circles and slicing it level with a knife. Yes, it's small, probably just about 5 inches diameter. Not bad for a first time laying a solid sheet of fondant over a cake. The bow needs help but that was a first time for me too.
The glossy appearance was achieved by brushing a light coat of water over the surface of the fondant. The fondant is mostly sugar so the water dissolves it, allowing the surface to flow level.
Yes, the whole thing is edible although I should have added some flavoring to the fondant - it doesn't have the best taste out of the box. Posted by Sue Brown (Member # 6677) on :

Mike, here's one my Mum (in the picture) and Sister made. My mum has been making cakes for 4 decades and my sister trained as a chef and now has a cake making business.
All the flowers are sugar paste, they were all handmade and handpainted.

Mike, I did a little research on the web on fondant before I posted to see what it was, I knew nothing about it..
Hats off to you, it looked like touchy stuff to me.
That is glazed so smooth, it does not look easy but you made it look simple.

Sam, it's actually pretty easy.. but I was working on a small cake. The fondant is rolled out considerably larger than the item you want to cover which makes it more flexible therefore no annoying material bunching up in one spot that you have to cut and repair. I was a bit leary going into it, knowing what would happen if I were applying vinyl to such a surface, but had none of the same issues I thought I would have.
'Sis and I get along real well now that we're both grown up.... and living 6 hours away from each other. Turns out we have a lot in common these days - creativity, enjoy cooking, working out and staying healthy.
