Here is a sign I was asking questions about not to long ago; What chisels to get.. what material to use... how would you do it etc....

Well, here is the final result. I am quite happy with it. More importantly, the customer LOVED it. He was very happy and handy me the balance due shortly later.

Here are some step that I went through for those interest. Thanks for all the advice and direction guys. It has been helpful. Critiques are still welcome.

 -
outsourced the carving to a CNC machine. Pre-primed and painted the HDU and then masked with Gerber Mask and they carved the text on both sides & the shape

 -
For some reason my masks don't work so hot. When I primed the carved text the primer creeps under onto the face. Notice the center of the "P" and along the white line. Do you think this is because the paint is a Satin to flat finish, oil based?

 -
Here are the carved bottle, grapes & leaf. Started with 1" HDU, worked down the background to about 1/2" to 5/8". Left it all a little rough. Who needs perfectly sanded grapes at 20ft away. Plus- it looks hand carved.

 -
Everything put together, painted & hung. The bracket was fabricated by Cam. It is real heavy duty & nice. And here is another pic-slightly closer. -

The picture from the other side was not so great, bad light, but it looked the same, as you can imagine. I liked this one. Sorry for the long post.

Boy-O-Boy, Phil, that is real purty!
Complements the building nicely, and the carved panel is gorgeous.
Cam's bracket is like a good piece of jewelry on a beautiful woman.

Philip great looking sign!!!

Since you used hdu I wonder if you could have used a clear of some kind at least for the first coat in the letters to seal off the edges I don't know I am also some what new to the carved signs .

Excellent!!

I haven't been over to the portfolio page in a while, but this first post I checked was well worth the trip.

Philip,
Very nice.

Which tools did you finally buy/use?
Next time carve the letters TOO and have even more fun.

-GENE- I got #7 5/8" gouge, v-carve tool and what I'll call a stop-cut knife (the official name escapes me)

Oh yeah man, very handsome design and execution. Top notch.

Your creeping problem was caused by 2 things it looks like...Obviously the mask was seamed in a poor location, but also your background is not very smooth, has an orangepeel texture (and being a flat sheen compounded the problem). Not sure where the texture came from - either try an additional coat of filler/primer next time and block sand out some of that lumpiness, or pay more attention to how the top coats go on - knock down your roller bumps with a foam brush or something.

Sure looks fabulous from a few feet away though - a testament to the strong design. Bravo.

Joe,

What is the solution to the creeping problem after the fact, meaning, would you try to somehow remove the creeped primer/paint, or paint an outline around your lettering to cover it up???

Thanks

Ok, anyone at all? How do you deal with creepy paint/primer?

Thanks

Great design.
Great color choices.
Outstanding job!

Here is a trick to help with the creeping I learned from Jay Cooke.

Paint all the carved areas with a thinned coat of the surface colour, this will seal the edges of the mask and than apply the primer and finish as normal

Also apply some butchers wax to the surface of your vinyl mask, and this will help relaese your paint and primer that comes in contact with that surface. a quick scuff on the surface and Bob's your uncle. Thanks Jay!

Thanks Dale, that makes sense, almost too simple - uhhhh.. why didn't I think of that! [Roll Eyes]
