Some of you will remember me posting this layout and asking lots of questions. This sign was my first crack at gold leafing, smalts, and carving HDU (or anything else for that matter) They just got the sign istalled, and you can see the gold sparkle a mile away! Thanks everybody for all your help!

Damn. Damn fine!
I LOVE the colors on the framing and the subtle tinting on the sun. Combined with the rich black smalt and the stone base, it's quite powerful - you made that place a landmark. You made it look easy too. Everything is just right.

Very nice Suelynn, Professional, and classy looking. How's that old pickup running? What do mean you didn't get it?

Wow, thanks everybody! The cement base was donated so I had to come up with something that would fit on the base that would be as durable as possible. The beginning of the project turned into a real gong show, they approved the design and the crazy guy in charge phoned and yelled "stop the presses, I've found the perfect thing that is supposed to be super durable" He had gone to another sign shop 3 hours away, asked them what they would use, and they sold him one of those white PVC prefab 4X8 kits. He actually paid for it and was having it sent to Carnduff. He couldn't understand why I couldn't make this design work on that white kit and thought with the extra space it would create on the cement base, couldn't they just paint up some balls to look like golf balls and attach them? I phoned him back and told him that we mustn't be connecting with this project, and if he felt he trusted the shop in Regina, that he should get them to make the whole sign. The rest of the committee didn't want me to walk away from the project, so this guy stepped aside and put someone else in charge. She was wonderful to work with and trusted my judgement. They are really happy with the sign now, and I'd love to see what the former guy in charge thinks.
The sign is 4X10 black diabond with gemini letters and black smalts. A local welder built the frame for me, and the autobody painted it for free! I didn't do anything for free, but I did donate my time to guild the letters if they agreed to pay for the gold. They were going to just go with the metallic gold gemini letters. I'm really glad they went for that offer (and I did mark the gold up) because I'm getting alot of positive feedback, and it will be easy to send the next committee out to see the difference it makes.
Sorry to be so long winded! Thanks again for everyones help. Amazing what you can learn for $50.00 a year, isn't it?
Mike, I don't have the truck yet, but I do have the cash scraped together for it! Don't write me off yet!

I think you made a smart move to arrange for real gold leaf, so that now you have a great showpiece to get other jobs like this. Way to go.

Congratulations on such a stunning result. It sure gives out the feeling of a high class club. Best design to keep the snobs in and the "riff-Raff" out.

Now that is my idea of excellence in signage. You did a beautiful job and are now guaranteed many referrals, you are well on your way. Proud to know you.

Hey Sorry to disagree - just looks too plain to me - should be much larger for a monument sign as well - much too small - guess I just might be spoiled on doing too much Casino signage down in Tunica -

Dear Suelynn,
Congratulations on a beautiful sign. I know your client is delighted.
We've produced simular signs this size, with gilded letters. Thought you might like the retail price we would charge.
Single sided 5'X10' with gilding and installations $7,188.00. Cost does not include concrete base, or taxes.
When we look at the bottom cost for a sign, to the client, there are variables, such as how many times I have to re-do the illustration, the degree of involvement with the client, the type of materials, gold, sign permits, size, etc.
Perhaps other Heads would give us their retail cost also.

Hey Joe - You're way too Low - - we start out at 10K for entry level signs - come on - catch up wid the real world - - -
Posted by Joe Crumley (Member # 2307) on :
Carl,
This is ever so good news. I think everyone would be interested in the pricing structure your company uses for entry signs
One area we stay away from is the brick, stone, and concrete structures which house the signs. We loose time and cost controll on structures so we just don't do them
I think it is so interesting that your company begins the pricing at $200 per square foot. That's great.
We have no problem with making more money so please assist us with how price you this type sign and perhaps an example or two.
What would you price this sign out at?

SueLynn, that is one great lookin' sign. Hope the folks around your town appreciate the talent and work that went into it. Please don't take any negative comments you may see on this post to heart. I just logged on and this is the second sign that has been slagged by the same s..thead...oops, didI say that?...whose ego is apparently larger than his talent. Read Jill's comments in the van post. I heartily agree with her, I'm just not as kind.
see ya' this summer, when you have THE TRUCK!

Hey, that's okay Mur! I can take a little critisizm! I figure if you can please 51% of the people, you're doing okay!!
I'll take it with a grain of salt. Not every sign can look like it belongs outside a casino. What a gaudy world it would be!!!

VERY Nice Suelyn!
Here's a trick I learned from this website for smalts background...
Cut a vinyl mask from your letters a 1/4" to a 1/2" bigger than them. Mask out where the letters will sit. Put on your smalts. Let it dry overnight. Then peel up your mask. It will give you a shiny, black gloss outline around your letters. Makes them pop even more.
I think that is how one would provide constructive critisim. Take note, Carl.
Great job again. Especially when it's your first of that type.

Carl,
No problem, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am still learning and value constuctive critizism from my peers. I understand that any type of art form will not be pleasing to everybody.
