One of those perfect clients who comes in and says he wants something at a certain price, allows you free reign on design and lets himself be upsold. He is thrilled! HDU - routed with spin saw, hand carved wheat and leaf, HDU cut out letters. Gilded with varigated copper leaf in green and red and artificial gold. Thanks for all the positive replies. No one mentioned it because you all are toooo nice, but I really feel like the sign is too crowded. I worked on it horizontally and didn't pick up on it untill it was painted and gilded. The brightness of the gilding makes it appear even more so. Lottie, yes I did clear over the leaf. It did dull it a bit, but the whole package is pretty glitzy so I think maybe the bit of shine that was lost was a good thing. I really like the variegated leaf on the wheat and maple leaf. lovely to see all the tones and colours in the varigated. i use a clear shellac to clear any leaf under 24carat gold. what were you using?
and tell all about how the leaf was carved/machined?

Thanks all! I probably wouldn't have thought it looked too crowded if someone else did it Miles I used automotive clear coat on the gilding. It is going to be close to the highway so I thought that would be toughest. I drew the leaf outline on the HDU and let my chisels do their thing. I had originally planned on using copper leaf on it - looks fantastic on a flat black background, but decided to try the variegated first - I didn't expect it to look so nice, so I was pleasantly surprised. I really like the green variegated on the wheat as well. It doesn't come across well in the photo.

I think the critical eye that got your design abilities where they are, forces one to always see those little things that will keep pushing your designs to where they make you even happier. I think that is a good thing as long as we recognize those nuances (sp?) are way past what the average viewer would spot & don't rework our stuff to death.
I'll be honest... I never thought it looked crowded while looking at all the things I love about that sign, but once you said it, I could see how you might think that of the circular copy relative to the borders.
(I actually liked the bottom nestled in the hay looking stuff in the first pic )
