Before.................

okay, this side wall looks right down the driveways of 2 gas stations, it's an ideal spot to have a little fun. I believe that this is the kind of concept that really draws attention and gets people talking, word of mouth spreads and......

I will be cleaning up the overall look of the store, so I think we can do this without it looking untidy, what do you think?

I like the name Wayne has given to the shop, it allows me to create a bold foreground for the place. I reckon all the rest of the guff they want to write on it can just follow along as the middle ground.

And this is as much of the design I will show to the client at this stage, I dont like to be locked into following a design on paper exactly to spec. Best to leave as much as I can to be decided on site.
There are all sorts of special offers and product logos etc, to add to this, I preferr to get the main message out of the way first, then step back and decide at that point how the rest will best compliment it.

This pic was taken Tuesday , building is painted, new awning ready to write.
Follow up pics not far away.

Right, thats the fascia out of the way, now for the under awning area above the windows. This is to feature the "everyday specials" and at the moment I dont have much idea of how to tie all this together , no doubt I'll think of something..........

The work on the windows was completed on MDO and fitted to the inside of the glass. This gives us the ability to easily change the message, reduces the risk of smash and grab and helps the airconditioning.
I'll get more detailed shots of the product pics asap, they are handpainted and airbrushed on to vinyl and applied, this will allow them to be changed easily should the need arise later.

Gee rob looks like a sign tornado hit that place.
I do have a suggestion seeing as the lovely fried chicken on the roof goes above the roof line and I assume that there are not regulations in regards to those types of signs (of coarse it may be grandpa ed).You would do 4 by 8 panels starting at the bottom of the overhang and going up 8 feet Braced of coarse. On each panel you do a sideshow carnival type mural with the individual services writen super emposed over the panel of lets say the
one eyed monster, the two headed deli lama and so on. I figure it works for the carney folk and I know you could do those panels up bigtime. Hope that gives you some ideas . Thanks Paul

Wow thats a busy-lookin place! Whatever you do would be a definate improvement!

My feeling is a big sign on the top advertising the "one stop shopping thing" and then window splashes showing what they have. My thinking is, while driving by, you are not going to be able to read all that stuff anyway. Once they get out of the car, or are walking by the store, the splashes of a cooked chicken, a cake, coke, whatever, will tell the customer what they have?

I'm looking forward to seeing what you will do.

For the wall;what about a Swaggie, chook on the camp fire, newspaper in pocket, leaning on a big old gum with little signs attached to it for groceries etc. and a long winding road into the sunset? Oh, and don't forget the fishing rod....lol

Would Merv & Jean consider letting you build up along the edge with panels forming a "L". 4 Ft height would give you a lot of surface to work with. The wall looks like it has good street exposure, ditch that potted plant and open up the as far back as possible. Is XXXX Liquor part of the same operation?

All good ideas guys, Yes Santo, we are going to build a new fascade to 4' to cover the end and the front.

We will also close in the top line of windows so we can use this area for the product logos.

The sign on the roof and the "Christmas tree"
are going.

Sue & Paul, I am reluctant to put any more up on that roof because of all the other "crap" thats up there, I feel we need to divorce our store from all that and create new clean lines.

We are also going to close in two of the big windows with MDO, on the inside to feature Special offers.

Linda, I like that idea for artwork, we are thinking in a similar way, but I have something a little more novel in mind, that side wall faces right at 2 busy gas stations.

Santo, the XXXX is a seperate store.

This is shaping up to be a major make over,
I love it.

High impact sign work Mark, did you know something? [Wink] ha ha.

Thanks for your comments, I am hoping there will be interest in watching this project unfold.

I also hope to inspire others to think outside the box with signs and keep this ole trade of ours alive.

I intend ammending this ORIGINAL post fairly regularly until the project is done, do you think that would be the best way to approach it?

Rob, What's Gin Gin Bread?

Posted by Rob Clark (Member # 787) on :

Santo, Gin Gin Bread is baked in the town of Gin Gin at that Bakery I featured some time back. It's about 40 mile north west of Bundaberg.

The Bakery job has led to this job.

Just another case of signage gone bad! What ever you do will be an improvement!

Posted by Steve Nuttle (Member # 2645) on :

Wow what a differance. I love the colors but I always like bright bold colors. The font in convienace (sp?) is a bit hard to read I think bit over all I love it. Is that a purple awning? Cool!

Posted by Santo (Member # 411) on :

Oh Yeah, Purple and Gold the royal treatment.

Posted by Linda Silver Eagle (Member # 274) on :

Rob,

I'm thoroughly impressed! Much better look than the "post it note" look they had before.

"Convenience" is a bit of look to read but it looks good and besides, I think the stop sign says it all!

I did get quite the chuckle from the cartoon wall you did! Actually, I'm still snickering here!

I would love to hang with you during one of your creative sessions, twud be a blast! You never cease to amaze me hehehe!

Mmmmm, Tasty! Will this be flat? Or will those letters be studded off of the face? Should look slick either way.

Thanks guys,

yeh Steve n Linda, "Convenience" is a stretch to read as you see it now, I will have to be careful about how I write it, I like the feel a good sweeping script gives and this is one of those words where the message will be understood even if it were left off altogether so I feel I can take a bit of license with it.

Jonathon, I am all about hand painting, so the effects you see will be created with the "brush"
in one way or the other.

Steve, we will be sheeting in the top row of windows with fabricated metal sheeting.

The work on the windows will be on MDO and fitted to the inside. This is easier than working in reverse on glass and is a good insurance against smash n grab raids and the like.

I just can't wait to see the finished product! This is really worth the wait for it to load.
I like both the side and the front. The colors in the front really do it! The cartoon crashing through the wall... will that be flat or extruded/molded/foam brick?
What hit me first is the front is so classy, up-town, sophisticated, (yes, Convenience is a wee bit difficult to read, but you know that), and the side cartoon is the opposite.
Not that that is bad, I'm just wondering about them being together... (?) or is it that opposites attract, and that's what you want?
The down-side to this is that XXXX Liquor (and the original store front) looked so
tired to start with, and now XXXX Liquor looks so much worse~you're now just going to be worn out from all the work you'll be getting, or, wait a minute, is that the up-side!

Great job!!

Baited breath here Rob, just waitin on you hehehe!

Absolutely fantastic overhaul!

Just white washing the wall from the original copy nightmare cleaned up the whole corner to a vast degree! Words cannot say what that alone did.

Then you worked your magic on the awning! WOW!

We have faith in ya mate! We saw what ya did with the bakery!

Lights, camera, action, Rob! yer on!

(no pressure)

LOL

Now thats an artistic impression-keep up the great work. If I may make a suggestion about under the soffit. You might want to place plain graphic imiges of store products.Just a thought!!

Posted by Rob Clark (Member # 787) on :

I'm still here, I decided to have the side wall rendered rather than sheeted, now that is all done and we have moved house I can get back to work.

I have had the side wall rendered in the shape of the broken brick (I hope?) ready for the artwork. This was a better option than sheeting the wall because it allows me to keep the original brick work in place around the outside, this is gonna help the end result be more realistic.

Rob
pure poetry
you've managed to make the subcopy compliment the facia without overpowering yet with excellant use of graphic shape and a clear helvetica style text you've achieved a message thats easily read
from a distance
A fine example of all elements working together
Feel proud

I just found this post today. WOW! I'm tuned in!

Posted by Rob Clark (Member # 787) on :

This job has turned into a bit of a nightmare.
I have had to wait for the plasterers to finish and the rendering to cure.

Then the guy next door in the service station has started cracking up about vehicles blocking his driveway and even tho' my truck isn't one of them he is refusing access.
I have heard that he has sold the servo and I know the new owners, they tell me there wont be a problem so I am holding out for them to take over, taking a while tho', I sure hope they haven't hit a snag.

I apologise for the delay, this was to be a straight forward job, I had allocated time enough for a straight run, now we've got Easter and lousy weather. ..............I love this game sometimes, don't you?

Stay tuned folks, this will go through...............eventually.
I will start a new thread for the wall, this post is becoming a bit laborious........hey, is that a word?
