We are closing down the shop for a week and headed to Kauai, any tips for us from you frequent travelers? Especially for younger children would be great.
If you are not using an air miles credit card to pay for supplies you are missing out big. In two years we have accumulated enough miles to get a family of six to Hawaii and a couple of other short hops. Good stuff.

Whatever you do, go to a bookstore and get a copy of "The Ultimate Kaua'i Guidebook". It's cheap and will help maximize your enjoyment. We like to stay on the eastern side of the island on the airport side. That makes going south toward Poipu and north toward Hanalei much easier. It's a small island but you can't drive around it...the northbound road stops just past Hanalei, at Ke'e beach, and you'll see why. Always, always choose where you want to go and try to arrive there before mid morning. Kaua'i a spectacularly beautiful place...I think the north end of the island is what God had in mind when he created Eden.

Wow, I lived there (in Wailua/Kapaa) for 5 years, there is the obvious Waimea Canyon, Princeville resort and Sleeping Giant hike. But I always enjoyed fishing, taking the boat near the Fern Grotto and the sunset on the west side. The best sushi I have ever had was at Tokyo Lobby in Hannalei. It's often possible to beat the crowd (maybe 4-5 people) to the good beach places. You can always tell a good place. what you do is look for a cluster of cars parked along the side of the road for no apparent reason. Get out and find out what's happenin...you'll most always be glad you did.

Go to the back side of the Island (to the right there's only one road) where the road ends there is a a series of water caves what an experience to swim there (if it's still allowed).
I once was siwmming there when beautiful young woman came wading in from the water as it got shallower and shallower she became more and more naked.
It was my favorite Hawaian experience.
Oh you said for the kids...ask around and find the Water slides. It was a movie set for a movie shot there.
And if you have a chance check in next to the Coast Guard docks and see if there is still a motel there called the Ocean View Motel owned and managed by "Spike" Kahana, Nawiliwili Hawaiai. I stayed there in 1969 for $39.00 a nite.
curious if it's still in operation.
Have a good time it's beautiful there...oh and don't forget to take the smith family tour up the only navagible river in Hawaiai to the "Groto"
