This may have been done before, shoot, maybe I even saw it and my memory isn't clear.
But here it is: You know how when you're marbling, and you use a feather to make "veins"? Well what if you did that with some sizing and then applied varigated or real gold leaf? It would have that gold vein in quartz look. Maybe use ivories, off whites and tans, to make it look like quartz. It would probably also need some more sponging, to make the gold not lay on the surface everywhere.
Mike Languin(Man, I hope I spelled that right) does some way-cool work like this. Maybe I saw him do it allready.
Wish I had more time to experiment, oh well, put it on the to-do list.

Here's the coolest panel I got from Mike L. during the first panel swap.
Very much like you said. There are flecks and streaks of gold through it. The picture really doesn't do it justice. It's gorgeous.

The "TRICK" is to lay down a (SIZING or VARNISH) with your feather for the non-uniform LOOK. From there the Gold Leaf/Powder/Perlescent Dust/or even Beach Sand will adhere to the TACK. The amount of ideas is only limited to your imagination! Thinking (out of the box) is usally the key.
Hope this helps

Lay in the size with a feather - when it's at the right tack crumble some gold above it through a tea strainer with a dry brush (fitch or chip brush) and let it fall down like snowflakes. Mash it down flat with a sheet of wax paper. If you want a solid streak lay it directly onto the size like any other surface gild. Above all else ---
