I am turning to letterhead.com for help because "NETWORKING FOR DUMMIES" couldn't even help.

I just reformated a computer and don't want to call in my networking guy because the last time it cost me $160.00. I was hoping someone could walk me through this as I need to re-format 2 more computers eventually.

A fellow Michigander and computer nerd did a wireless network for us. SWEET! It works well for us. I am sure he can travel to Lapeer or knows a fellow rent-a-geek he can refer. They all know each other, (LOL). Email or call for his contact info. 231-652-3300

Regards,

I've got a networking guy. Its just that he charges $60 a hr. I know he is really good. Its just that I want to be able to do this myself. I do know some. I did get a Networking for Dummies book but there wasn't enough pictures. I've tried hacking my way through this but still can't get it to work.

If it makes you feel any better, $60 per hour is cheap. I pay more, but I get to consentrate on what I'm good at. You are braver than me, I won't even try it!

Plus...What type of network do you want?
server type, peer to peer...

How many puters?

Hub or router?

CAT5? co-ax?

LAN or WAN?

Unless you are very knowledgeable about computer settings, and network settings, its going to be
quite difficult. There are just to many variables.

Need more information to answer your questions.
You also need to be more specific. (very specific)

On a final note: During windows installation, you
can add additional information to make configuring
your network at a later date.

Thanks Bill for calling yesterday and getting me as far as we did.

I have a 8-port switch that all the puters are hooked to on a LAN. All 6 computers can access the server and some folders on each of the other computers. The server has XP Pro, the laptop has XP, and all the rest have 98 SE. Those puters with modems, hooked to the net individually. I only need heep with my laptop. We've got it to the point that the other computers see the laptop but it can't read anything on the server or other computers.

we have the right workgroup, DNS/gateway numbers, etc.
