I've always loved to look at movie titles. They are very creative. A lot can be learned from the styles, layouts, etc. It is a direct reflection of the type of movie they are pushing. Very similar to a sign, it has to get your attention immediately. The letter style is very important. I've wondered if there has ever been any books printed with just the titles, or logos, of movies. Not the entire posters, just the titles. That would be very kool to have. Has anyone ever seen anything like that before?

Luke...
I know some of the older movies often have some really original-looking titles...the kind that look like a really good signpainter might have done. I'm with you, I'd like to locate a source for viewing some of those movie title art pieces. I'll start checking around, and see what I can find.......

Just take a stroll through your local BlockBuster (or favorite video rental store) with a camera and take photos of the cases on the shelves.

I had the good fortune of meeting and talkin shop with a guy at last spring's Conclave that actually does movie titles for a living. The guy uses Illustrator and Mac...and talkin with him made me feel like a beginner. Learned some really cool new stuff that weekend, but the best thing I learned was that I gotta keep learnin.
....which, by the way, is what goin to Letterhead live meets is all about.

One of my mentors (early 80's) was Carl Hermanson. He designed and hand lettered a lot of the posters and signs for Loews Theaters back in the 20's, 30's and 40's. He's since past away and I've lost touch with his wife and son, but some of the pictures he had were unbelievable! He was shaking hands with John Wayne, partying with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. My favorite was a picture drinking (drunk actually) with Robert Mitchum.

Some really great pages here. I've saved them all for future reference. Thanks everyone!
