Just to and some info on buffing edged tools: Black compound is emery in a binder, coarse and fast cutting. Use on a muslin wheel. Tripoli is brown compound and intermedate or medium. Use on a felt wheels for pecise honing hard felt for straight edge tools, and medium felt for curved edge tools. Red rouge polishes more than hones felt wheels for tools, muslin for precious metals. Green rouge is a fine and has a dry binder, more dust when used. on felt or leather wheels it will put a shaving edge on tools. On muslin wheels it can be used on all types of metals for the best buffing job. White is best used on brass and copper for removing scrathes. muslin wheel or felt.
Making your own leather wheels or hand strops use only vegtable tanned leather. 4 or 8 0z weight (refers to thickness of the leather) glued to plywood disks or a board you can glue the leather two both sides of the disk and a strip around the edge and use 3 grades of compound on the 3 sides. It is important to only use one grade on each side so you don't mess the edge up. and when you start buffing to hone an edge start slow as the heat can build quite rapidly.
