I'm doing a three small signs (6 to 8 square feet each) for a customer who wants brushed aluminum. The Dibond - brushed aluminum finish - seems like it will work for these. Does anybody have any experience or advice on applying paint to this finish? Other than cleaning with alchohol or Rapid Prep, do I need to scuff it, or is it "already scuffed"? I couldn't find out if the Dibond coats the aluminum with a clear coat or not.

NO! Don't scuff!!!!!!!!
Clean it to shine under the Sun!!! Then Paint!!!!!!!!!! Take all the Grease and Oils off.......
Scuffing means a New shine with clearcoating Scooter.. Clean to the Knuckle Test Then paint away my friend. Always follow their paysheet. Posted by ScooterX (Member # 2023) on :
Thanks Raven,
I knew if I asked I'd look like a dummy...
... but if I HADN'T asked, then i would have discovered that they use some miracle clear coating that resists 1-Shot or something... (Murphy's law). Posted by TransLab (Member # 470) on :
Scooter, Keep us posted as to how this works out, I use a lot of dibond, but I've never used the brushed aluminum finish. I wonder if samples are available?

Mike,
I got some 3" x 4" color chips at the Mars Letterhead meet last summer. The brushed aluminum looks pretty nice.
My supplier only stocks in in 4x10 sheets, with aluminum on one side and "bronze" on the other. (i don't know if that's the finish that matches window wall systems, or if its an anodized aluminum). The only negative of that is that if one side gets a ding or dent you cant flip it over to use the other side.

I can't help you wit painting on it but I do know that the brushed aluminum, they call it "Butler Finish" is rated for interior use only.

Scooter,
You might wanna try clearing it with One Shot UV Clear and then painting over it after it dries. Paint lays down nice after that.
Hope this helps... Rapid

Raven, I was thinking of spraying the UV Clear after I painted it, but it sort of makes sense to "fill and clear" with the spray before painting. (using the clear to smooth out the brushed finish marks).
Is there any problem with putting the lettering enamel over the acryllic clear?
