I was trying to save a file as a bmp on my shop computer and couldnt find the extension in the list. I have photoshop 7 by the way. I also have it on my home computer, and while saving anything on it, I notice the bmp extension is there, along with a few more I dont have on the computer at the shop. Tried to find where to change this in preferences, but couldnt. Any ideas?

John: I beleive there is a place where you can choose extensions, or file types during installation, if I'm not mistaken.Could be wrong, getting old, ya know. I checked my version & it bmp under save as.

I think what Larry is talking about is what program will be the default prog to open certain files if you just double-click them. To open files from within photoshop, the available choices should always be the same.
As for John's question, I know sometimes if you pull down the "image" menu & choose "mode" you can change the mode between rgb, or cmyk, or greyscale, bitmap, & others. Often the .bmp extension will be available from the "save as" choices along with.psd, .jpg, .tif & so many others. Sometimes when I have a black & white scan & I don't get the "save as" choice of .tif for example, I check the mode & find it is set to bitmap. By changing to greyscale, the .tif choice for .tif becomes available.
So John, I am not familiar with your exact situation, but I would check the mode, & try changing it, then return to "save as" & see if that changes anything.

May have something to do with your channels. Check under image, mode and select 8 bits/channel instead of 16. A lot of Photoshop internal functions do not work in hi bit mode, which is 16 bits per channel, (16 bit greyscale and 48 bit RGB). Even Photoshop 7 can't handle 16 bits/channel, were still waiting.

I agree with Doug, try changing the mode. I have had the same problem and somehow stumbled onto changing the mode and the extension I wanted appeared.

If you're working with masks, channels or layers in your image the .BMP extension will be not be in the 'save as' menu. Try the 'export' menu, if it's there it will ask you if you want to 'flatten' the image when exported, if its not listed at all then you did not specify which filters to install when you installed the program on your shop computer you may have missed some import and export file types. You can install these without re-installing the whole program, they take up very little space and you never know when someone will send you a file with a little used file extension, sure saves time to have them all available.
