I've got to do some 1.5 inch letters, in Arial no less. I tried lettering them with a quill, but i'm just not good enough yet to do lettering that small. I've already matched her special brown with some 1-shot, so i thought i'd hit some black vinyl with Ti-Coat and then paint the 1-shot onto the vinyl.

Here's the question:
Do I paint the vinyl first and then cut it, or do i cut it, weed it, and then paint? Or paint, then cut, then weed?

(I've already matched the paint - i'm not going to use screen ink or anything else. i tried some spray mask, and I' wasn't really happy with that either)

I have learned from the Brothers Frog that you cut the vinyl, spary it with FrogJuice Brand Brown and when it dries/gets tacky, then you weed it, let it dry a little more, then apply low tack transfer tape... and WahLah!

Beeeeee carefull on loading up your cut lines with paint- you will either lose them or (this is fun) reseal them to each other again.

I Don't use other brands so you'll have to wait on the specifics with the One-Shot from someone who's tried that. [Wink]

After trying several paints that are suppose to stick on vinyl and not being happy with the longevity, I gave up and went back to One Shot. When I airbrush vinyl, I use FG then paint. I have cut the vinyl after painting and before. I actually prefer cutting after painting. If you paint after cutting, you need to weed before the paint dries and that can cause boo boos from stick backs.

Don't what you are lettering on, but if you expect vinyl to stick to it why not use it as a mask for the paint!!!!! [Roll Eyes]

I'm using enam-l-coat to put oneshot on vynil and it's doing great ..let the one shot dry and do what you want ...it's doing the job ...

Hi Scooter,

I've also found if you use a little heat after applying the paint it will help open the cut lines, this makes weeding much easier.

I have ONLY done this with createx, krylon and screen inks. Not sure if this will work with the enamels. Maybe someone can shed a little light on this one too. Interested to know.

Scooter,
Just cut the vinyl and use it as a mask.
Paint it and go home nice and early.

For letterstyles like Arial, use a flat brush to get the corners sharp. I use Luco flats and have had good luck with them for years on "block" letter styles.

Try "Enamel-Receptive" vinyl. It comes in both clear & white.(both work great) Clean the vinyl off with de-natured alcohol, plot it as usual, brush or roller coat 1-Shot, allow to dry to almost dry state, weed & allow to completly dry then apply.
PS, works great for airbrushing, but you cannot wait for it to dry completley, before weeding.
