Question...
I bought a quart of this stuff that is supposed to give me a beautiful glass-like finish on my sign. The sign is 2" HDU with one shot paint and 23kt gold. Now, I've always been told never to coat gold leaf. Is it OK to coat the gold leaf with this stuff? Should I just not coat the sign at all?

Anybody have any experience with this stuff?

Thanks,

Mark [Dunno]

Bumping this up for Mark.

I think the One Shot should be glossy enough and see no reason to clear it. As far as I'm aware, the only reason to clear over gold would be if it's on a vehicle that would be subject to washing or on a sign that is in a spot where people might be inclined to touch the gold.

Hopefully someone with more experience will back me up or tell us otherwise.

Novices tend to believe that clear coats are totally important to put on signs. Experienced sign veterans, who've witnessed how (quickly and consistently) the clears break down, (tend to) avoid using clears whenever possible.

Mark, I don't have any experience with this yet, but I'll bump it up because I want to learn more about it as well. I searched back to Pierre's "back support" post to see if I could find info, & saw that you were there already stating that you had just ordered the stuff.

I would guess then, that you already saw this, but for Terry, & others that may not have, here is a little bit of info on Pelucid. It seems to not be just a "clear" for adding gloss, but more of a protection.

quote:
PELUCID has been tested by our studio extensively. We have
found NO other final finish coating that remotely compares to
Pelucid in all of the applications which we tested. For finishes on
sandblasted signs, hand carved signs, routed signs and all
combinations of overcoats and paints, Pelucid has proven itself to
provide an incredibly hard permanent surface that WILL NOT
yellow or change color. It may be applied directly over vinyl films,
as long as they are well bonded to the substrata. Once the proper
cure sequence has been acomplished, Pelucid sets up a "rock
hard", resilient surface that will withstand the ravages of ANY
weather, including south, fixed sign faces with NO cracking,
checking or fading. We have used Pelucid for a three year period in
a myriad of applications and on a wide variety of substrates and
various paints and stains with NO failures of any kind. The
viscosity is very thin and spreads and flows evenly. You may have
to avail yourself of our toll-free line for assistance in odd
applications. We are experienced and we can help with your
unusual applications.
If you use highly polished metals in your artwork or casting,
"Crystal Clear" is the ultimate coating for your project.
POR 15 Products are sold by St.Marie Graphics to signshops
on a wholesale level with larger discounts for volume purchases.
Please use the links below to find the POR 15 Product that fits
your signage requirements. Pelucid will prove itself to be the only
final coating your shop will ever require on your metal, wood or HDU signage.

Mark

The pelucid will do a great job of what you are wanting to accomplish, I would suggest spraying it on rather than with a brush or roller.

As for clearing over the gold, it does tend to diminsh the burnish but any clear will. That would be your call.

As many have said, the gold is fine if left alone.

Hope this helps

I agree with Robert. Don't know about the gold but don't even attempt to brush on (gets sticky real quick). I've sprayed with success.
