I HATE TO TELL EVERYONE BUT THE BLASTER VIRUS, WHICH WAS BELIEVED TO SPARE USERS OF 98, WILL ATTACK 98 USERS. My internet link people had sent out all kinds of warnings but told everyone using Windows 98 they were safe. WRONG!!! I just took my laptop in and it was cleaned by this virus. I don't use it for internet so I don't keep an updated Virus protector on it. My desk top was saved by the Norton. I was trying to network the two computers when this happened. Just thought I would give everyone the good news on Monday to go along with everything else.

I didn't think that virus "cleaned" any infected computers, I thought it just fouled up internet access. Sounds like bad news either way, I hope your tech people find some better news for you if they are still working on it.

I agree Doug...The MSblast virus that I got didn't do any damage at all. It just kept shutting the computer down with 60 secs notice to save any files.

Oh and here is some more "good news" I was talking to a guy this weekend who works at the 911/communications in our area and he said that the government sent out a notice thru the police/rescue channels that this is going to occur on a monthly basis! Not the same virus but something new each month! Don't know if that is "the gospel" but I trust this guy and he was not making something up. Better check on you virus scan programs....

Speaking of virus scanners. Here is an article by Dave Coursey at ZDnet Anchordesk
quote: SUSAN'S E-MAIL was short and to the point: "Your three mistakes are: 1. Loading up a Norton product; 2. Not checking out the Event Viewer and then going to EventID.Net; 3. Buying XP Home. I refuse to run any Norton product on any Windows product."
I had " Symetec" before and I had several virus go thru and my internet people said to get Norton. What is a person suppose to do?

sorry to hear of your troubles. I almost hate to add confusion on top of everything else, but Symantec makes Norton... I don't think symantec has any other anti-virus besides Norton.

Sorry Doug, you are right. I was thinking of Mcafee that didn't work.

Blaster virus uses the RCP sytems in Win NT programs. (win NT, win 2k, Win XP, and 2k server) to attack M$ update system. WIN 98 SE does not use RCP systems.
RCP is an NT based system..There for its not likely Win98 is down because of a Blaster virus. However, there may be another virus on ye machine. By the way this attack was predicted many weeks ago. Teh Blaster virus did not want to shut down the machine ..It wanted to be up to send out packet attacks to the Microsoft site. The 60 second shut down was a consequence..
According to M$ all versions of win nt, 2000, xp, and 2003 are affected by the flaw but since hackers are using the flaw to spread other trojans/ worms/ viruses, etc. that affect other windows os'es, its a still good idea to run firewall, a router and also keep antivirus software up to date.
Firewalls do not close every port. Some ports are open for FTP, netbui, browser, email and other legal reasons.

One more little thing that people can do if they are running Norton is go to the Symantec site to download then run the intelligent update. These are virus etc. definition sets put up on their site Monday through Friday that have undergone full quality assurance testing by Symantec. Live Update usually only updates the definition sets on Wednesday of every week. For more information about the differences, here is their description. updates
