A bunch of you Lettervillians have expressed an interest in having the new panel swap involve fictitious businesses that might be found in Letterville. We have prepared a list for you to choose from.

You are to figure out a name and a design for your business. Names for these can be serious, funny, puns, innuendoes, or tongue in cheek.

Entrants will be assigned one of their choices. All choices will be honored on a first come first served basis. This will allow for the greatest number of business types to be utilized without having repeats. If we forgot one type of business that is prevalent in your area, let us know and a decision will be made regarding your choice. There will be no Sign Shops or Pinstriping Shops featured in the “On The Streets of Letterville” Panel Swap. This one place where the owners really could do their own signs…

When your project is done, you submit photographic proof (an e-mail address will be provided for that because the Hotmail account will not take the large files that are going to be sent) and you will given the name of the person you will send your project to.

This will allow all our international Letterheads to play also. I am sure that most of us would not have a problem with waiting for an incoming panel if they were assured that one was actually on it's way.

This is going to assure that anyone who submitted a project will actually receive one in return. This is going to ease a lot of doubting minds as to whether their efforts will be in vain or not.
All panels are open to any type of sign, prop, medium, etc. It doesn’t matter if you use paint, vinyl, digital printing, carving, blasting, wood, HDU, metal, etc. You are governed only by your imagination, budget, time, etc.

All entries MUST be completed and shipped by October 15th, 2003. Pictures must be e-mailed to an address to be determined. This will give you six weeks to complete your project. They will then be posted for all to oohed and ahhed over, flaunted, shown off, boasted of, and generally held to praise.

Anyone not completing their project in a timely fashion will have their names displayed for all the world to see to be cajoled, have dispersions cast upon, their characters questioned, ridiculed, ball busted, flamed, roasted, made fun of, and generally looked down upon. You have been warned. [Wink]

Good luck and I look forward to hearing from you all!

Have a great one!

I don't get it? It actually says Letterhead/Pinhead Talk in the heading of this Panel Swap.

I am a pinstriper who actually does pinstriping for a living, no lettering over 1/2" tall, will this count if I were to join in?

Bruce, should I print out these rules yet, or are you going to let people bully you into changing then for a day or two? [Smile]

The problem with different takes (repeats) on a particular business would be?
What if you have cool ideas in your head that don't relate to what you've been "assigned"?

Assign me what you want, I won't ask permission to enjoy running with the voices in my head ... forgiveness later is easier [Razz]

See if I got this right,

I pick a business, like "donut shop". I supply a name, like Draper's Donut Hole. Then you assign someone to make the sign, whom I don't know.

At the same time, I'm sent a name, I'll use Doug Allen for example, and he wants "Allen Trucking".
Then I make the panel and send it to him.

Is this right?

Posted by Troy Haas (Member # 472) on :

I sent my e-mail in but I thought you were to "pick 5" of the business' that "YOU" want make and then that is what you send to your panel pal.

Example, one of my choices was the "Movie Theatre", I am then assigned that business and I get Bruce in the draw, I then make a "Movie Theatre" themed panel and send it to Bruce....

Is this correct????

Or is Dave correct and as usual I am totally lost???

I have to side with Joey here. There are both pinheads and letterheads here. I am both, but many pinstripers don't letter or make signs. These would all be signs.
I think I like the more open format for choosing to do what you do best. Pinstripe art, fine art, sign, carving, gold leaf etc.
This is a cool idea, but what about the pinhead buddies??

Maybe we should have a Pinhead Panel Exchange seperately. [Smile]

:rolleyes:Im sorry i am going to pass on this one for the sole reason that I am to busy at the shop but i do think it is a mistake to forget that their are a lot of pinheads on this board.

Dave, I think Troy has it right... but if anyone sends me an AllEn's anything... it's coming back for a repaint [Smile]

Now tell me Mark, or Joey if some dude comes up all stoked about your striping work, says he owns a Tattoo Parlor
Surf Shop
Hot Rod or Speed Shop
or Motorcycle Shop
& says he wants you to make him a "sign" as a purely artistic namesake for him... no need to suck in the 50/50 crowd off the interstate... couldn't the bulk of the panel be the embellishments that brought him to you, but fit a shop name in the middle somehow? Just a thought...

Then there's always the other Marks idea... (here we go again with the Marks [Smile] )
Just follow your own vision. I know if I was the recipient of an all pinstriping panel I'd be honored. (Lettering, what lettering?, haven't you ever heard of "linear braille")

Yea, there's also a bunch of pinstripers too..

Seriously, just about every pinstriper I've met over the years was capable of hand lettering. If it's a problem for joey, maybe he could make the sign in 1/24 th scale [Smile]

O.K.

I see it....five is spelled out instead of "5"

Boy did I miss that.

Why 5?
--------------------------------------------
I already sent my request, of one, now that will really screw things up!
---------------------------------------------

As for too many rules and not enough time...that's a lame excuse and a cop out. I want to make my sign and send it and get one back ASAP. Dragging this out 4 months is stupid.

If you had a customer come in and he wanted his sign in two days...you would find a way.

If a trade show were coming up and you needed a banner for your own booth, you would find a way.

Most of you work BETTER under the pressure of a deadline. Last time, I spent too much time re-designing my panel because I knew I had time. I would rather come up with the first thing that strikes me and get it over with. I don't want to be plagued with "Ah, I should have done this, and I could have done that!"

And I'm glad I took the time to learn to pinstripe AFTER I learned to hand letter so I'm not in the boat you pinheads are, not being able to letter...what's with that? Use the dam plotter to make your letters reverse weed and air brush them for heaven's sake. If you don't have a plotter, Your next door neighbor probably does, so get a stencil from them! You act like your forgot how to use your brains!

I think this will be a great panel swap. Thanks Bruce!

Geez guys... no one is ever happy are they??

First off, it seemed like people liked the idea of a theme. It would also help people who were late due to having a tough time thinking something up.

This way, YOU pick 5 that sound like something YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE something for (like Troy was thinking). Everyone will get something different. When you get your one done, you will send it to someone else. Simple as that.

Make a sign, cool. Design a logo, cool. Carve a mascot, cool. Print a poster, cool. Hey, if you pinstripe, and can't letter or use vinyl or have something printed, then heck, pick up a model truck from WalMart and stripe/graphic/whatever to represent the business you picked. You can't tell me that there are that many people on this board that NEVER do anything for a commercial customer!!!!

I also said something to Bruce about the short time period - I agree. I personally think that should be adjusted to be a bit longer, but not so long that it's drawn out like last time... people were complaining about that. I think he's just trying to prevent that from happening again. If you can't get something done, then don't say you will do it... kinda like in your shop with your customers.

It was tough on the people that never received their panels, as I am sure that it kinda bugged the folks that did a nice panel for one of the people who didn't do one. It's just keeping things fair. Not pointing fingers, just reality. How often have you had a customer come back to you after you told him you would do a job in the past, but just never did?

The people that want to complain about rules and restrictions, I can't believe it!! I mean, really guys. What do you say to your customers?? I'm sorry sir, but I can't do your sign because you are too restrictive on size/color/design etc etc etc. Get real.

This makes me think of being in sign school. We got an assignment "job" on Monday... for example: Joe's Body Shop, it has to include an oval and it has to be done by Friday. Then we did it as if it were a job.

This swap is like the local town pub, restaurant, doctor, vet... calling you up, saying make me something really cool, you design it how you want, I just need it by such-n-such a date. What's so awful about that?

It has NO size restrictions, NO media restrictions, NO specific name, NO color ideas, nothing... it's completely up to you. Sign, poster, model car, trash can, whatever.

How often do your customers let you do that??

I've learned a long time ago that you will never make all the people happy all the time... there will always be someone who can't wait to complain about something.

I think this is a cool idea. If you don't, than don't choose to do it, but please don't rag on the people who want to and who are trying their best to keep it organized, ok?

Oh Dave... Bruce had originally said to choose 3, it was me that suggested 5.

Why not just choose 1? Because I'm sure that several people will choose the same ones. We're trying to keep this very diversified, with no repeats. Otherwise there would be 20 sign shops, 18 taverns and a sprinkling of other stuff, you see what I mean?

He's gonna take each email he gets, look thru the choices one by one. If it's open, cool, it's yours to do. If not, he'll go to choice #2 and give you that one.

I kinda figured several would be popular, so I thought by asking for 5, it's less likely that he'd have to contact you back to say it's been taken.

And you get to choose something either you enjoy as a hobby, think would make a cool design, you already have a fun tag line or whatever.

I think the way Bruce is doing it is the only way it can be done. Too many people took way too long to get theirs done and some didnt even do one.
Although this one has rules, they are there to make sure everyone gets something in return for the panel they did. Terry did a great job of organizing the last one, and he had alot of patience with those that took so long to finish.
As far as the rule that says those that signed up for the last one and didnt send one in cant participate, thats only fair. People that worked hard on a panel last time ended up getting nothing. Others worked it out between themselves.
I think Bruce has it by the tail, and Dana made some really good points. Treat it like a job, and get it done. Then we'll watch the movie. [Smile]

Posted by Jeff Ogden (Member # 3184) on :

Well for some of us this is the busiest time of year, and I feel like it would be better to do a panel in the slower times, like around Christmas and January. Why try to cram it in to an already hectic schedule?

Just another point of view.

Posted by Peter Schuttinga (Member # 2821) on :

I think the rules are fair, although the timing may be a bit tight for myself.

A thought I had when I read about the last swap:

If you do a project and complete it, make a picture and send it by E-mail to Bruce. Bruce will send you the name of the next person to complete a project/send a picture. This way there will only at a maximum be one person who may not get a panel, which could be rectified. This also means that someone who takes too long will have to wait to send it to someone who took even longer.

Does this make sense?

Love the idea and will send in an E-mail in a few days. Got ot put on my thinking cap.

[Smile]

jeez..

Setting rules and timelines is the only way to get artistic types to get anything done!

If this was a paying job, you'd manage to do it somehow, but since there's no money on the table and based on what happened with the last panel swap, this is the only way to do it! Hey, there are STILL banners floating around out there somewhere, and those projects were already rolling 3 YEARS ago before I joined this site!

I personally won't be participating in this panel swap (didnt get in on the last one either) because I know my time is already spoken for and I wouldnt be able to meet the deadline - boo-hoo! [Smile]

Sheesh.. if ya wanna do a panel swap with someone just arrange it on your own time by your own schedule.. or trade an Aussie a custom painted license plate for some Cherry Ripes candies like I did. [Smile]

I think its been put together in a really great way, I am very tempted to have a go myself. Freight costs from here are quite high and if I do a panel it (depending on size) might have to go by sea taking 4-6 weeks to arrive, this might also be the case for other International folk.

I wonder if this is OK....

Look in the mirror. Too busy? You don't seem to be too busy to post to say you won't be participating. If you are not participating, so be it, you don't have to rag on Bruce and Dana's efforts to organize this.

Posted by Doug Allan (Member # 2247) on :

I for one haven't learned to hand letter or pinstripe yet, so I think I will make a point of doing both on this panel! Not saying I'll do it half as well as others would, but like I've always said when I've had my artwork complimented in my life... "I don't necessarilly know how to _____ (paint, carve, gild, stripe, letter, etc.), I just don't stop until it looks good"

Too many rules? cause we gotta give Bruce both phone numbers and addresses? Oh, you mean the theme of shops on the streets of Letterville? Bruce doesn't even claim that idea, but when someone else suggested it there was a lot of interest, so upon some sort of nomination he stepped up & offered some VERY loose guidelines for any who care to participate in a swap on that theme. I don't see it as being all that limiting really.

Not to get too political here, but anarchy has its merits & its flaws. The last swap was near-total anarchy. Some suggestions were made re: personalizing a panel with the local flavor of the sender or the recipient. Many followed this thought. The due-date was set, but often referred to as a no-pressure guideline, not a rule.

Now there is always democracy as another panel-swap leadership tool... nah that would take years to pull off.

Dictatorship has a bad name. I think it is under-rated as a viable method of leadership. We all have seen the drawbacks in the anarchy of the first swap, so having a few rules set out clear & simple means we can start playing by those rues quicker, without a lot of debate.

Or I guess we can debate anyway... but I got approval on my choosen storefront already, so I'm gettin' started.

When the lights go up "On the streets of Letterville" my sign will be in place.

I'll be proud to participate in this international
event beyond the level of just typing at youall.

At least people opting-out before they commit instead of after is a step in the right direction, but I hope some of you nay-sayers will change your minds. Especially you Monte. I'm sitting here looking at the awesome panel you sent me, thinking someone is really missing out on a great panel, but more importantly, as in any great piece of art, it is clear in its splendor that you thoroughly enjoyed creating it, and I can't see how you wouldn't have as much enjoyment & creative freedom participating again, even within the confines of a few friendly rules.

Just think, this one starts & finishes so fast... just do it! then we can all get together and debate again real soon about how to do another one! [Smile]

I think Bruce has set up a situation where the spearheading of a panel swap can become a less stressfull occassion.

Hey Bruce, I'm in, but just wondered how specific we need to be with "design" - If we pick the business we are interested in and the name we want to use is that sufficient? If we decide to make some changes do you want them run by you first?

Wow. [Roll Eyes]

Where are all these rules and "NO this and NO that's"?? [Confused]

Pick a type of business and make a panel. How is that "too many rules"?? [Dunno]

If I were leading this one, I would have done something similar to Peter's suggestion to avoid people not completing something they've committed to. But this is Bruce's deal and my hat is off to him for taking this on. [Smile]

Good luck, Bruce! I think you're the perfect person for the job. I didn't have the heart to "out" all the people that didn't finish the first one. I thought as long as people had promised me they'd finish in all the e-mails we sent back and forth, I could count on them to live up to their word.

BTW, at one point I had said there were around 12 incomplete panels from the first one. In reality, there is 19!

What is this? Ya get on my case because I don't letter anything over 1/2" tall? How many of you can do a triple outline on a 3/8" to 1/2" letter in Old English on the drivers door and get a hundred bucks for it?

Pinstriping and designing is my forte' pinstriping is what my lifes work is and I make a darn good living at it. I never needed to do signage, like others who couldn't always make enough just striping or couldn't get the whole picture in life. Reminds me of the shoemaker who worked with leather so well that his friend asked him to make a leather suit, Duhhhhh! Did I miss something?

Try doing real thin designs with a sword striping brush other then a Mack, no quills, no scroll work. Make the lines uniform and make the design as perfect to the eye as it can be, then tell me how many signpainters actually do pinstriping. Try doing real straight lines where both sides can be seen by its owner and excuses no longer used.

I never wanted to be a contractor, a ditch hole digger, or an electrician and I hate permits. When I was very young all I ever wanted to do was pinstripe. Is that so hard to understand. Of course I can design and make shirts, cut patterns, and make tools some of you work from on a daily basis. You think I want to go the same places you do? Eat at the same restaurants, talk the same sh-t? Well I don't and I'd be damned if I did, to the same place half you people are at, trying to figure out which color to use, and probably be doing the same antique sign with the same antique scroll over and over and over and over again in antique hell.

Well, since thats been said, have a nice day [Smile]

I really don't know what I classify as: at times, I feel like a pinhead, other times a letterhead (used to be a pothead, but that doesn't apply to this)...

But anyways, I think it's a COOL idea. I hate I missed last year's. Rules are rules: if you can work within em', play the game. If not, sit on the bench and cheer on the rest of the team...

I'll send my e-mail in later...

As far as choosing names for businesses, that's all up to you, just let Bruce know the business types. But please, guys, don't name EVERY business "Letterville" company, ok?!? [Wink]

Do something like Fry Electric - Let us Remove your Shorts! or Dr I. M. Bonkers, Psychiatry or whatever. Make it fun, make it serious... make it custom by YOU.

And Joey... why don't you do a model vehicle then? I, for one, would be thrilled with receiving that! Go thru the list and come up with one of the businesses that you could do some cool striping and little teeny lettering for. I'd be willing to bet you'd come up with something totally awesome!

Hey all!

I have read over all the responses here. I am going to make one major change because the idea just absolutely rocks!

Peter Schuttinga suggested that when your project is done, you submit photographic proof (an e-mail address will be provided for that because the Hotmail account will not take the large files that are going to be sent) and you will given the name of the person you will send your project to.

This will allow all our international Letterheads to play also. I am sure that most of us would not have a problem with waiting for an incoming panel if they were assured that one was actually on it's way.

This is going to assure that anyone who submitted a project will actually receive one in return. This is going to ease a lot of doubting minds as to wether their efforts will be in vain or not. Great idea, Peter!

We have 20 entries so far. Make your selections while the pickings are good... Well, they are all good but maybe one strikes your fancy more than another.

I am looking forward to hearing from you all!

Heres an idea. Like Dana said, you wouldnt want to put the title Letterville on every panel, but what about putting an address on each one. Like Bowers Amusement Park, then Letterville as the address in small letters somewhere or whatever. That way the sign is tied to the site, since its a letterville panel swap. [Dunno]

John...just what IS the address if you were to put one on your panel ? Letterville,_______ ?? [Confused] ...Planet earth??

That thought hit me too Jeff. Cant put USA, or Canada, or whatever. But it might be a good idea to put "City of Letterville". Maybe?
Just trying to help out here, it was just something that crossed my mind. [Applause]

I enjoyed the first panel swap. And I look at the panel Judy sent me every morning.I have it hanging in my office. But, I am just entering the busy time of my year and I feel I don't have time to do justice to a project at this time. So Good luck all.
And Maybe I can participate next time.

Bruce...I'm glad I registered early. Got my first choice!!!

I commend you for taking on this project. It just baffles me how some people (none of whom I recall raising their hands to be the coordinator), just whine about rules, regulations, schedules, stripes vs. lettering...

man, ya get the feeling if ya handed out hundred dollar bills...people'd be crying about" why'd ya gimme a hundred, why didn't ya gimme 5 20's..NOBODY'S gonna have change fer 100..."

Looking forward to it all, and again

THANK YOU BRUCE AND BRUCE'S BRAINS (er, I mean Dana)

Keep on keepin' on

What a wank.
It seemed like such a good idea at the outset too.
Maybe an alternative swap would be to do a satirical panel and send it to someone you dislike, at least that way the panels would be completed with a bit of passion.

Bruce,

I think you missed a few good ideas for the "Lettervile" places...

Consignment store
"Letterville Speedway"
snowmobile club
sports arena/ballpark
fast food restaurant
car rental
video rentals
court house
nursing home
high school
massage therapist
palm reading
warehouse outlet
information booth
used car parts
hospital
university

Ok, I'm probably making this worse, but I had about 2000 ideas pop into my head when I read your original post. Go figure. [Dunno]

Another RULE!
Seems if you don't send your info to the correct address...in other words don't email to Bruce's email address, send it to the 'panel swap' email account....
ya..no problem...I'll send it all again later...when I have time...

Ray, anybody doing Letterville Speedway will have to get permission from Coca Cola to use their logo on the end panels [Smile]

I bet a cajun restaurant would do good in Letterville....maybe we can talk Kathy into cooking?

Bummer for rules, huh Shirley? Better not sent it to Bruce's personal email, since his computer's been screwy and down lately and it makes it almost impossible for him to check it!!

So, by using Hotmail, he can check it from any computer... even mine! [Razz]

Cool ideas, Ray. Maybe the next swap can be streets, part 2, with all the leftover ideas for shops.

I've seen a couple of the lists... it's kinda fun to see what people choose! I had a hard time choosing... but I wrote my email to the panel swap address, with my 5 choices and all my info.

Bruce is waiting until the sign-up deadline to choose his from what's left.

I really like not knowing who's gonna get my panel - keeps me from being so gosh darn intimidated!!

Bruce sorted it out Dana.
My fault for not reading the first post accurately.I was too excited & wanted to 'get signed up'.
I get to make the sign I had my heart set on!!!
This is gonna be fun!!

Hey 'Heads...

Some thoughts gathered while pondering why I ever volunteered to do this...

The list has been updated. Remember, if there is a business you want to do a panel foe, and it is not listed, please let us know and we will accomandate you.

We have almost 30 people already! That is awesome! I am pleased with the results so far.

We are leaving tomarrow night to go to Quebec, so I might be a little behind on the updates. I had a serious problem with my computer recently and just got it back online today. Thank you for your patience. Dana was getting a little tired of sharing hers... just like I did when her's was down for the count.

So much to do... so little time...

Have a great one!

Hey all!

We just got back from FKAB yesterday. We took a long liesurely drive back through the Adirondacks. I apologize for any delays in responding to e-mails. I will have everything all straightened out by Friday.

We had 6 new sign ups since we left for Quebec. That brings us up the high 30's for sign ups. I can't wait to see the end results. It is going to be great!

Thanks for your patience!
