What would you charge to letter/stripe a police car?
Deputy came by this morning wanting a price. Says "xxxx is overcharging us."
When I heard who it was, I said that I normally don't even TRY to bid against him. He ALWAYS underbids me. He says that xxxxx is charging them $250 per car. "So and so sign shop was charging us $150 per car but they left town" I smiled and said "cuz they wasn't makin' no money"
It's got a broad green reflective stripe with a metallic gold pinstripe on top of that. Everything is green rflective with a gold drop shadow. I said that looks like agood deal to me. He says " the paintjob was half that!.....$125. I said "where'd you get that?" he says "the inmates at the prison". I said "well yeah,....free labor" I told him that I would not undercut the other guys price.
This guy leaves and comes back this afternoon with a different patrol car to show me. Then he mentions the $125 again. AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE?? Guess he thinks I might change my mind? And get in a price war with xxxxx like HE was in with the last guy?(the one who left town)
I've been waiting for him to raise his prices for years. Why should I mess up a good thing?

Wayne stick to your guns. That reflective striping is not cheap. Plus it is a pure bitch to work with at times. Do not give yourself away. Fred

Wayne,
He's price chopping...not shopping. Sounds like he's got the $125 stuck in his head and nothing is gonna change it.
I get at least $300 for police cars. The reflective is not cheap. Don't worry about the other guy's price. Figure your materials and labor and set yours accordingly.
If the $125 idea won't go away, tell the deputy to. No profit...no do.

He can't even buy the premade marking kits from GALLS for that price. I think I would let him "just go on down the road" It's worth $300 and up with the reflective material.

Actually Mike, just cypherin' in m' head, I think the materals would be somewhere in the ballpark, neighborhood of about, maybe, close to, between $50 and $70 or thereabouts. But don' quote me on that.

I had the local constable come up with a price of $160 (30 cars.)
The job consisted of a four color flag from the front wheel well to the end of the rear door. A 13" 5 color reflective shield on each door. The dept. name in two colors reflective across the doors above the flag. Reflective 911 stickers on each side. Reflective Dept name and shield on trunk.
I was really sharpenin' my pencil up until he told me that incluided removing the existing 24" reflective shields.
I Passed.

Seein as i work with sheriffs Depts. all over this area, the guy was probably trying to broker the job... Make a little for him and a little for you...
In any case our dept. pays $500 bux a single unit for the lettering and strips all reflective. Or pay $350 a unit when they take over 10 units..

Thanks for the replies guys. I was just curious as to what others charge. But the other guy is doing a good job and i ain't gonna undercut him so, I'll pass.
Guess the prison should use its bodyshop 'profits' to buy a plotter. Looks like us taxpayers will have buy it for them.
