Several already compained about the low durability of silver vinyls. what about the others metallized colours? (gold, copper, anthracite, or blue metallized, ...) Same problems or better experiences and durability?
Thank you!

Hiya Desire, Metalized polyesters, like brushed gold, don't last long outdoors. They are not intended for outdoor use. The color will fade in a few months and the polyester will delaminate if not edge sealed. The metallic colors will last considerably longer if you follow the manufacturers directions and use them accordingly. Knock on wood, I've never had a failure that I didn't expect.
Havin' fun,
Checkers

Thats good to know Checkers, but I can't accept your reasoning, you see I use the metalized stuff called Ultra-Leaf which comes in real shiny gold and silver and been using it on my vehicles a long time. Since its used outdoors and seems to holdup a minimum of 5 years, at least on my last vehicle, I have no complaints recommending it to others, maybe its because I seal the edge with real paint done as an outline which makes it last, but I can't accept that as the cure. I use this stuff because it looks great on vehicles and retracts light and I've had great luck with it.

Check out Gerber/3M's 210 Series Deluxe Silver and Deluxe Gold... web page.
Deluxe Silver lasts 5 years outdoors; Deluxe Gold 3.
Here's a high profile, national program that was done a few years ago using Deluxe Silver... FORD CANADA Posted by Rob McCauley (Member # 2735) on :
I used to work for an Avery distributor and the 2 key elements in failure of metalized products are Polyester &, as Checkers put it
quote:follow the manufacturers directions and use them accordingly
There are metallized products on the market that will give you great outdoor life, as the others have said, but they will cost you accordingly. The cheap stuff (like the Avery Metals) are Polyester and simply not recomended for outdoors. Polyesters are no match for vinyl when it comes to outdoor durability. Butch Anton made the claim at a seminar I attended that the Coburn specialty products, metals and such, would last quite a long time outdoors if properly edge sealed. I can't speak from personal experience on that but then again I haven't been around as long as Butch either

I did the graphics on my own shop van 6 years ago using Callon II regular "metallic" gold. see pic www.jonsigns.cjb.net.
After about 3 years it started to fade out and is now a bronze color. We have a very high UV index here in Queensland. Also on the rear door it is starting to curl on the edges. Probably because it's parked most of the day with the rear to the full sun. Time for a refit
This time I'm going to try Sign Gold as I have seen the Metallized Polyesters let go after 2 years which all they are recommended for outdoors.
But then, I only intend to keep the van another couple of years maximum so economics come into the equation. Whatever, it has to be replaced as it is definately a "Bad" advertisement at the moment !

Jon..I lettered the windows of my van in August of 1998 with SignGold on Avery 2 mil as a shadow/outline. Here it is August of 2003 and the lettering looks as good as it did 5 years ago.
You will LOVE SignGold!!! Right Brian????

May be I was a little bit unclaer in my enquiry.
In French one say "couleurs métallisées" for car. and I've interpreted mettalisé by metallized. But it's sems that metalilc paints for car are the right wording. so I reformulate my question for metallic vinyl, not for polyesters foils.

Desire My post above refers to the durability of metallic vinyls. The gold definitely discolored after a few years and is finally curling on the edges after 6 years of extreme sun exposure.
I have also used Silver metallic and light and dark charcoal on vehicles. Although these hold their "color" better, again I have experienced curling of the edges after 5 years.
Hope that answered your question.

Desire.
If you're search for "metalized" films includes gold and or silver, consider SignGold products. Our Gold Vinyls are genuine 22 karat gold, so "fading" or "bleaching" is not a concern. Gold stays gold, and doesn't turn silver after extended uv exposure.
Our products are based on Tedlar, a PVF film. Not PVC, and certainly not polyester, as many imitation products are. With edge sealing, you can expect a minumum of 10 years with outdoor applications.
If it serves to help you at all, check us out at www.Signgold.com, or feel free to contact me directly.
