You WILL need a passport OR birth certificate to travel into Canada.
It used to be a drivers license was enough, but not now.
And if you are using a birth cert. it must be a certified birth certificate, not a xerox copy.....trust me....

For American visitors - please keep in mind, you are entering a foreign country!!! Just 'cause we speak the same language (kind of) and use currency in the same denominations - you are no longer at home!!! In our area border crossings have become more difficult. Several of my customers who own large tourist lodges have guests who have experienced problems - please check before you enter. We have a very different criminal justice system and people who were considered minor criminals in their home states (ie driving while impaired) in the distant past can be turned away at the border. Personal possessions (read guns) that are considered acceptable in the US are not allowed. People have been detained for carrying potato chips. Please be informed, be prepared and do your research - just like you would do for any foreign travel. Then love the time you spend here! Deb

Yes Karen, you do need the marriage license (to show them why your name is different from the birth certificate). Also if you were married twice you would need both marriage license. Just go to the county you were born in or married in and get a CERTIFIED copy. They will not except the copy out of your baby book or you wedding book. It's got to have the stamp on it! Been there...done that. When I went to Canada a couple years ago I went with 4 bus loads of high school students, teachers and chaperones. One of our kids was a foreign exchange student from Japan. Was THAT fun to explain to customs! I felt so sorry for the poor Japanese kid getting grilled on what he was doing there. I thought it was pretty obvious! Oh well, I guess they have their rules...

As far as I know, your working stock is okay, including lipstick, just don't bring any fruit; live plants, & animals are gonna require documentation.

interesting...i just spoke to my friend who just went to montreal last weekend and she said they've never even asked her for her license! we would be crossing in vermont...she goes often and has never had any problems...i will bring everything just in case(even those forged release papers)...cause i have bad luck. see yas at fkab!

I really doubt you will need a marriage license to explain why your name is different than on your birth cert.
As long as you have a picture I.D., that's all that's required., along with your birth cert, of course.
Passport is best, but I never renewed mine (since 1975)
The Canadians are very nice letting you in, it's the Americans that can be difficult...it's their job, that's all.

Late breaking schedules recently determined that I won't be able to crash FKAB, <nuts>, but I wanted to share a further caution with potential travelers who might have offspring with them - If your spouse is not with you but your kid(s) are, you better have rock solid documentation of why their other parent is not present, that they know of this trip, and you have the authority to be kidnapping your own children across international borders.

I've never been to Nebraska, nor have I ever met anyone form there or who has been there either....so how do I know it really exsists???

Adrienne, I was told by our local county clerk and the travel agent (from Canada) to have BOTH marriage license along with my birth certificate. That was about two and a half years ago. I don't know if that was necessary now or not, but that is why I went to the trouble. Jane

Expect LONG delays at US Immigration check points!
On our recent trip to America it took Sue and I over an hour to get thru immigration at LAX!
Si took us on a "shopping" trip down to Mexico. We tried to return before the rush hour, BUT, although there were over 20 gates open, it took us over TWO hours to travel 2 miles
On the lighter side: Overall we went thru 17 "security" checks on that trip. Sue twice lost a pair of sissors hahahaha. Didn't realise she had them in her carry on bag. I went thru every check with an old-fashion double-sided razor blade in a shaving holder! Became a joke!!! Figured all they could do is take the blade. Another pack in my check on bag.

I just went up to Vancouver yesterday for the ISA show and met Susan & Mike (Splash in Nanaimo Fame) - great folks, I could have talked all day.
I asked at the border going N & S if the wife could use her expired passport and both sides said yes. All they want to verify is your point of orgin - seems a drivers license would be sufficient. I had my PP in my shirt pocket so I just showed that. I didn't even bother with my drivers license. Of course they didn't even ask me to take my helmet off to see if it was really me either.
Thats my story and I'm stickin to it!

Speaking as a fellow Canadian, it's much better this way. Canada was a safeland for terrorists because it was so easy to enter. It's all for the better and safety of NORTH AMERICA.

It would seem to me that experiences of crossing borders can vary greatly.
Each time I've crossed into another country I've experienced different levels of scrutiny...
It may be the customs officer or just that particular crossing.
Sometimes they've just glanced at my papers, other times they've lookled at everything I had and asked me a lot of personal questions watching me very carefully to see if I'm telling the truth (very uncomfortable)
One time coming back from Victoria, I was with a friend, the customs officer goes to our Church and recognizing my friend, just waved us through without asking for our IDs at all.
