I'm watching my new Alison Krauss DVD. WOW. It's a complete concert filmed in Louisville last year. It is the concert on the Live CD. I went to the same concert in Jacksonville, Clearwater and Fort Myers. The Clearwater and Fort Myers were a day apart. I worked an Aerosmith concert on the day between and prayed my hearing would return in time. It did. If you like bluegrass or just beautiful music you should get it. Dan Tyminski sings "Man of constant sorrow" from O'Brother. Of course Jerry Douglas shows why he made the dobro my favorite instrument.

I love bluegrass!
Nothin' like the sound of a Banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle.... almost anything with strings playin' together.
I love a dobro too but, never heard one played quite like that. Mighty fine! Alison has such a clear, smooth, pure voice and Dan harmonizes so well with her.
Dennis, have you ever listened to Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver? You'll have to do that. Better yet, see them live. They're top notch singers/musicians and put on a first-class show. Their a cappella will give you goose bumps. http://www.efolkmusic.org/ArtMusic/ViewArtist.asp?AID=357

On the radio at this moment they're playing a concert of Doc Watson, Earl Skruggs and Ricky Skaggs somewhere in NC. Allison just joined them for this last song.

About four years ago, she was a headlining act at MerleFest in Wilkesboro, NC on a Friday night. I went with a girl I was really close friends with and another friend. Wendy was really into Allison Krauss and I didn't understand why?!?
It must have got into the 40's that night, because Wilkesboro is at the foot of the mountains. As Allison sang, you could see the steam coming from her and the other players of Union Station mouths. It didn't slow them down a bit!!!
I learned that night why so many fall in love with her music (and her). I know she doesn't write ALL the music (or much of it, for that matter, just like all bluegrass. Most of it is passed along, I think) but the way she carries it is amazing.
If I'm working on a really intense project, I'll put in her CD or the O' Brother CD and let em' play for hours. It's really great music for both your ears and your soul...

I've been intoAllison for a number of years. Her teaming up with Union Station was one of the best things to ever happen to music. If you can sit throught the song "Looking through the eyes of love" without the harmonies making the hair on the back of your neck stand up.......check your pulse.

I've never really talked to anyone who said they did not like her sound. It is the greatest shop music we can find. My mom even went to get one of her CD's -- Andy said seeing her live last year in Wausau was one of the best concerts we have ever seen. Not too loud, comical and we could not agree more with her advice that night which was "Scratch it if it itches, even if it is in your britches" That about sums it up. . .gotta love her!

Spent 6 days in the hills of Tenn. at a invitation only bluegrass event,where AKUS was one of several top name groups in attendance. It turns out to be an inter-industry version of our "brush parties", lots of family and kids, and plenty of bluegrass, nite and day. We were literally in the hills(27)miles from nearest town(berg?), on a 100+ acre farm, w/large barn and smoke house. Everyone spent nites in everything from motorhomes to small campers, and we were fed from smoke shack with lots of good southern food. The best was , of course, the music, we played "brother, wherefore art thou" many a time in that week. I was pickn' n' grin' with the heavies of that industry, Earl Scruggs, Jerry Douglas, Ricky Skaggs and family, and many, many more. It was, by far, the best week of my bluegrass career, I'll never forget it, or at least until the next one...heh-heh. Allison's contribution to bluegrass music and her middle of road style, has gone a long ways in making more people aware of a very exciting music, t/y AKUS....

I work as an usher at the St. Pete Times Forum so I can see anybody in concert and get paid for it. Alison is the only one I pay to see and will drive however far to hear.

You guys are right about Allison Kraus, but just wait till you hear Rhonda Vincent. She's got a bunch of CD's out. Bluegrass at it's best. Or listen to Gillian Welch. Now that's a songwriter of old style country, what some people call roots music. Her stuff is really compelling, somewhere in between folk and bluegrass.

I'm new to the board and glad to see so many bluegrass lovers here. I'm from the same county as Earl Scruggs...so I've listened to it all of my life. Play a little upright bass when I get the chance. I've got about 200 bluegrass cd's....hadn't counted the tapes and LP's lol.
Want to talk about grass.....count me in! lol
For you Dan Tyminski fans....he has a solo album that is really good. "Carry Me Across The Mountain". It's on Doobie Shea Records.

Sounds like the start of a Letterhead Bluegrass Festival. I play 5 string banjo also. I've been a bluegrass fan all my life.
A couple days ago I caught the last half of some great bluegrass while flipping through channels before heading off to bed. Don't know if it was a new show or a re-run but it was on PBS and featured Allison Kraus on fiddle, Ricky Skaggs on mandolin, Doc Watson on flat top and Earl Scruggs on banjo with a host of backup musicians on several songs. Talk about some great pickin and harmony.
