I am at that point where I need to purchase another newer and better scanner. I need the best that I can purchase for $750 or less. Anyone have any recommendations or know where I can read some good reviews. I need to be able to scanner photos really good.

Head on over to Staples. I found an HP flatbed scanner there that was refurbished for only $60 with a full warranty!
A lot of computer stores (Staples, Office Max, etc) have plenty of good scanners depending on your needs. If your just doing photo scans, you might want to look into a multifunction machine. A scanner/fax/printer combo.
My whole system, including PC, printer, scanner and CD burner added later, came in under $750. I highly reccomend looking under the shelves at Walmart's electronic isle, usually under the music section. I've found a ton of goodies there at super discounts, from printers and faxes to home theaters and DVD players.

For me, one of the most agonizing things about scanning is the wait time for a preview. The Epson Perfection 1200 series has extremelty fast prescans (about 6 seconds--my Visioneer was 45 seconds) and the quality was very nice. They are available for under a hundred dollars. I have the Epson Perfection 1200U and the Perfection 1260 as well.

just bought a new microtek scanner, this one does 35mm slides/negitives, 2.25x 2.25 and 4x5 negitives. 4800x2400 48 bit its a scanmaker 5900. we got it for $149.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i built a new computer and i cant get my old canonIX-4015 800X400 that was scussi to work on this new m/b so i got my canon u656u a small scanner and its 1200x600...does so much better scans then my IX-4015.

I have a Hewlett Packard Scanjet 4200C that I won't be needing in the near future. Nothing wrong with it but I need a fax so I'm getting one of those combo fax/copy/scan/printers to save space. I'd be happy to send it to you for the cost of shipping. You can probably check out the HP website for the specs on it if you're interested. If you buy a new one I think you should be able to get a really good one for less than $200.00.

I am a big fan of the HP scanners, my last one was a HP 6300C wich was about 400 bucks and scans beyond my expectations.

I have a Canoscan D2400U (or UF?) which does negatives, slides, transparencies up to 4 x 5", and ordinary stuff, up to 2400 x 4800 dpi. It's great at optical character recognition, and for pulling detail from a pic the size of a thumbnail to enlarge it substantially without pixellation. For negatives, it's not bad, but the file needs a bit of unsharp masking, and sometimes colour correction. Preview time is quick once it gets going, but it takes a while to start. And the poor Chinese(?) attempt at English grammar in the messages is tedious to have to read. Cost was $670 Australian. I'm happy with it.

I have a UMAX Astra 600S and I can't come close to matching a 35mm photo when I scan it. I'd like to have a scanner that didn't require so much messing with color and sharpness and manipulations to attempt getting the phot to look like the original.

Unless you need a wide format scanner buy the Canon N670U it will save you a lot and you will love it. Heck I even think Walmart sells it now they have a good warranty and no I do not work for walmart. It is USB and works perfect for me I can only think that if you have an older system with older USB support it might be a problem setting up but if your system is within the last year old or so it should be a very good choice. Now not to knock the HP's but I could tell you stories about three different model HP's and I do not recommend also I use a Microtek 9600XL it is wide format but it is another one I would not buy again. My friend has a Agfa scanner that has been a good value and I do recommend also I like the Epson's but they are over priced IMHO. Also I had a dirt cheap plustek I bought about four years ago and I think I got it for like $79.00 at the time and it is still working great.
