I have always been able to cut graphics as long as 15' on my friction feed Roland, without any drift problems. Recently, though, I noticed that there were drifting problems in runs as short as 4'.
Not wanting to send it away for repairs and not wanting to pay the bux to replace it, I took a close look at the pinch rollers and grit rollers with a magnifying glass. Lo and behold!!! The grit roller under the left pinch roller, which basically is always in the same position, was filled up with some kind of crud, to the point of having hardly any grip at all.
What to do? Rapid Remover and a stiff bristle toothbrush to the rescue!!!!
My cutter is back to it's old self again!!
So if your friction feed cutter is drifting, take a good close look at the grit rollers!

Yes I have been doing the same thing every year. Also I groved the Upper Pinch roller so it would Toe-In, like a dirt track race car or motorcycle. i have told people how long I can make a Pattern or Cut Vinyl.seee to believe. Posted by Kathy Joiner (Member # 1814) on :
I too have used Rapid Remover for the same thing. That crud you removed is probably adhesive accumulated on the roller from the edges of the vinyl. Especially if you are using punched vinyl unpunched isn't available in certain sizes or colors.

HEY!!!! Rapid Roger doesn't give me ANYTHING, except a hard time, when I tell everyone to apply vinyl dry!!
Well I guess I am kinda lying..he did send me a sample pack a couple of years ago.

Dave, a query about a Camm1: mine has its knife holder servos or motors suddenly start to squeal and reverse when I turn it on, and also when I lift the rollers to release the vinyl. I've started to keep earmuffs beside it. Otherwise it cuts fine. Any ideas. The driver doesn't seem ti be the problem as it happens even if disconnected from the computer. Thanks

Actually, I only have a problem with reflectives, perforated. I thought it was due to the waxy backing paper that the wheel is forced to ride against, but I'll have a better look.
Some time ago I heard a rumor that someone was inventing a contraption to keep the vinyl aligned better for long cuts. Anyone hear any more on that?

Donna, Try moving the pinch rollers in over the vinyl after you home the machine.Some machines will let you do this some won't.Also I let my vinyl run against the left side of my machine as a guide and use my thumb nail against the right side as a guide to keep it from shifting.Very rarely blow out reflective any more.We go through about 200-300 yds of 3m 580 a month.

Apply a little white grease where the pinch roller lifters are riding on the release cam.
Just look from the back as you lift and lower the cam lever and you'll see where I mean.

HAHAHA Dave when I saw the header for this post I thought I had something to add...I'm sure some here remember "cutters" were flat straight edged brushes used for lettering walls and bulletins.
One thing they had in common with todays "cutters" ...they need to be properly cleaned and oiled for good service.

Plain isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol works also. So does mineral spirits but it doesn't evaporate as well as alcohol.

Mimaki designed the contraption for long cuts many years ago, but they stopped using it for some reason.
My old CG-6 could cut a 50 yard roll without realigning. My new CG-60 EX can't come close.
