Is rapid remover supposed to eat white paint off aluminum?
It's an old trailer, the paint is old and greyed. I removed the vinyl and tried removing the adhesive with RR. It's taking the adhesive off very well and it's real nice and white but appears to be obliterating the paint as well. I'm starting to see aluminum underneath.
I'm just applying it to a small area at a time, scraping off the gel with a squeegee, applying again and wiping it off with a paper towel. Then I spray and clean with RT.
Should I try something less powerful?

Sounds like the paint is dead. When it turns grey, it means it has chalked and has no strength left. If you apply vinyl, it won't hold. You must clean the grey layer off. Try an area with plain old paint thinner...if it acts the same, and strips it down to the metal...then it's time for a new paint job on the trailer.

Thanks Si, The mineral spirits is taking the adhesive off(when I removed the vinyl it left ALL of the adhesive) AND, it ain't taking the paint off no more. The Rapid Remover, and Unglue were ruining it.

Red Flag!!
You should be stopping right now and talking to your customer. If the paint is old & gray and the Rapid Remover is taking off the paint, this trailer seriously needs repainted. Let your customer know he either needs to have it painted before you put anything on it or you do NOT guarantee your work on it. If you don't do this, it will come back to bite you in the butt. The vinyl may be 8 year or whatever, but you can't expect it to last longer than the worn out surface it's being applied to.

Thanks Chris, I agree whole heartedly and explained to him this morning that the paint was dead. He's evidently operating on a shoestring and doesn't want to go to that expense right now.
