I have been asked to look at a Fire Engine to redo or repair the gold leaf on it,This is a first for me,can you regold over a existing graphic or does it need to be removed altogether and start over?

without knowing the condition of the existing gold it's hard to say which will work best...you can guild over the gold to an extent(actually patch the holidays in the gold) but if the varnish is peeling pretty bad or more than 20% of the original guild is gone then i would remove the old job and reguild. you need to test a small portion and clear to make sure your varnish or clears are compatable and does not damage the work underneath.

The original is signgold vinyl, It would be hard to match the same letter type, so I was looking at guilding...Thanks

I would definitely remove the signgold, but you may want to make a rubbing if they are using the same layout on their other trucks. If I was gilding a hand lettered job, I would also make a pattern if necessary, then remove the old copy and sizing with Easy Off oven cleaner. There are other posts in the past about this proceedure and the necessary precautions. A search using the words easy off should do the trick for finding that topic. The reason for removing the old stuff is I would not trust the old sizing to hold up under new paint, if it had already begun to deteriorate.

If the original is SignGold...you CANNOT patch it with rel gold.
SignGold's surface layer is a Tedlar film, and paint and/or gold size will not stick to it!
