I know this question is a very broad one, but any help will be appreciated. I am interested in software that I can use to produce web pages. Specifically at this point be able to post thumbnail photos that can be clicked on to open the thumbnail into a larger image. I know how to post photos on my own web space using Click FTP. Trouble is the viewer must click on each individual link to open the photos. It would be much better if they could be view as a thumbnail first. Thanks.

If you know how to write HTML code, you can actually create web pages in NotePad or WordPad. You can then preview them in your browser offline and if they're okay, upload them via FTP.

The next step up is freeware and shareware. Go to tucows.com and run a search on HTML editors. These make it easier.

The way to go if you want to develop a number of web pages into a full blown site is with either MicroSoft FrontPage (about $180) or Macromedia Dreamweaver MX (about $360). These applications make site and page creation very easy and come with tutorials that will get you up and running with beautiful results in a couple of hours.

I was using Adobe GoLive and just made the switch to Dreamweaver which seems to be the application of choice for most website developers.

To build what you describe you need to create a home page then link it to another page that would display your thumbnails. Each thumbnail is then linked to a page containing the larger picture. [Cool]

I’ve used a lot of different HTML and Java editors. I started banging out the code in a text editor. For the most part they are all pretty much the same once you get through the learning curve. One that is particularly easy to learn is called Hot Dog.

Once you learn the few commands you can set up a pretty nice web site in no time. You can make it as simple or as sophisticated (even adding thumbs) as you like.

If you are using Photoshop 7 (maybe others too ... I use 7)
there's a neat little tool in
File -> Automate -> Web photo gallery

You choose the layout (framed, slideshow, open new window), photo sizes, etc. ... then automatically resizes the pictures and seperate thumbnails (to sizes you choose)
then writes all the html for you ... which can be copy/pasted to your design if you like.

examples-
framed auto-slideshow and thumbnails for my inlaws family reunion ... I took his disk of pictures and within 5 minutes I put this on the web for him

thumbnails that open a user driven slideshow in seperate window ... html pasted into my own design

Don't remember how I happened across that tool, after years of using PS not knowing about it ... but glad I did.

Web Studio has to be worth a look. Mainly drag and drop, it doesn't require html knowledge to get an impressive site up and running. It is VERY easy to learn and use, does almost everything (certainly thumbs) and has a dedicated forum and users site gallery. There is the option of a 30 day day free trial, then about $60 if you are happy with it.

Dreamweaver/Fireworks user here, too.

Mark M, thanks for the tip for photoshop. I have PS6 and the automate function is there as well. I will have to experiment with that feature.
